Help... my fiancee just drove my car with hand-brake pulled..
argg..... as title said.. my fiancee drove my car without putting down the hand-brake lever and drove for at least 25-30 miles at frequent 60 to even 70 mph local route........ she didnt notice the hand brake and she was thinking whats wrong with the car with all the rattling.. 3$*#@$@ (she is a new driver, and never had to drive during her 27 years of life until last year.. )
$#*$@# other than wearing out my brake pad much quicker... any other damage it could have done to my car??? (i dont know, alignment, brake fruids, etc etc? )

The constant dinging and warning light didn't tip her off that something was wrong?
Man, I'd ask for the ring back. Just kidding. That really sucks though. I've done it for a few feet before, and have always wondered what the impact would be. So I am very interested to hear the definitive answer here. <to the tune of "Hear Comes the Bride"> Dumb da da dumb. Dumb dumb da dumb. Dumb dumb da dumb dumb da dumb, dumb da dumb.

Is she blonde? I ask because there is a constant gong that goes off when the E-brake is engaged and it doesn't stop, plus the instrument cluster shows a icon of the E-brake....Two things that make a person say the E-brake is on and I better dis-engage it...I think the only thing it will do is wear out the pads more, I just hope the rotors are not warped from the heat that was created from constant friction for about 25 miles!

Go for a drive and if you feel any shuddering in the rear under braking, chances are you'll need new rotors. Other than that you can look for excess pad deposits on the rotor and remove those gently with a scotchbrite pad.

I am simply speechless..... I dont know what to say... and no and no to the answer, she said she felt some rattling, but saw the warning red light.. she was not sure what the light meant and continued to drive..... she thought might be the engine (since we talked about the fuel pump issue).. I just received phone call from her literally about an hour ago.. I literally dont know what to say.. I am gonna check out the car later tonight when I get home after work.... Any brake experts here kindly get some inputs on what else it could do? (my baby is only 3500 miles old)............... I think I may have to bring the car in to have a quick inspection..

Most likely nothing to serious happened. Just make sure you take the car for a drive later. Next time you go into the dealer for service i would just have them look over the brakes.

You guys seriously have no idea about the workings of the parking brake do you? (Sorry, but it pisses me off a bit since the dealer loves to show their idiocy when it comes to brakes as well)
-The parking brake doesn't use brake fluid -There will be nothing wrong with the rear brakes. -The parking brake is a drum brake that is inside the rotor. -You don't need an allignment. If you take the rotors off, you will see the parking brake. The worst thing that your wife did was wear out the parking brake pads or warp the inner side of the rotor. This will do absolutely nothing with the workings of the rear brakes. Please don't tell the dealer because they will tell you that you fried your rear pads/rotors (impossible) and that you will need to pay for it.

I think you might have just saved me hundreds of dollars right here!! Thank you!! I am feeling much better now. I will just bring the car in and ask them to do a routine check without telling them what happened and see if they saw something..

Also, forgot to ask, so the parking brake drum is entirely different from the normal brake pads that we use? Because I think i have only used my parking brake 2 or 3 times and I dont think I will be using it often at all... what I am trying to say is... what my fiancee did is to decrease the life of the parking brake pad, but I dont have to replace it right away now, since it is seldom used and will probably last for awhile.. right. ?

Tell her that you have spoken to the dealer and they said you will need new brake pads and rotors and new wheels. You will also need to get a new gear box all of which will cost $$$$.
She will feel totally bad resulting in lots of goodness for you from her!!

You are probably fine. The drum just got a really good wear on it - honestly. Unless you park your car on a hill everyday then start to worry about that handbrake - but my bet is its working just fine.
I've seen someone pull the same thing as your new wife... it was of course a women (I was just a kid at the time, but I was sitting there wondering to myself, does she honestly not smell the pads burning up or the shaking from the car? I think they are wired different then us). |

This is good info. I've always wondered if there is a separate mechanical drum brake for cars with 4-wheel disc brakes. Never had a need/chance to check. Now I know.
My two cents: If she drove for 25 miles without noticing a burning smell, then the brake was not pulled very hard. Plus, if it was pulled very hard, the car would be difficult to drive--you'd have to keep the accelerator down, and a smooth stop would be nearly impossible. Kinda makes me appreciate my wife a little more. I'll have to give her a hug later. |
