So I need advice. I just passed 97k and all of a sudden the SES light pops on. Now I am scheduled to go in for service just before 100k since I'm under the CPO warranty. I had the SES light before and they replaced the VANOS sillenoids. Should I make an appointment and take it in right away for the SES light? Or wait 3k and take it in for one last service? Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Service engine soon usually means a serious (normally emissions related problem).

Make an appointment to go in as soon as possible.

Ok, so I took my car in last week. The scanned it and got the fault code 2A16, something about a fuel system micro leak. They said it happened twice, but they checked everything, including the gas cap, and everything was ok. So they cleared it. Well, my SES light just came on again on the way home. I checked the gas cap, and it's on tight. Any ideas what might be causing this?

hey, just curious...what problems did you notice right before you got your silenoids replaced? mines been misfiring and shaking at idle alot lately and the mechanic says its the silenoids. did replacing them help out alot?

There is a VANOS solenoid DIY in the DIY section. Read it. The solenoids can be removed, cleaned, and replaced (it's best to swap positions - they are the same part for intake and exhaust). It's a half hour job at most. No "re-programming" necessary. You should clear the fault codes before doing the work. Maybe that's what the mechanic is referring to.

Ok, so I took it in for the second time after the light came on, and it was the same 2A16 fault code for a micro leak in the fuel tank ventilation system. They replaced the fuel tank vent valve this time as they thought this was the problem. Well, my SES light came on again, only a week after getting it back. Assuming it's the same thing. This is really starting to get annoying. I don't believe that any of my mods could cause this issue, as I only have a PBX and a muffler delete. Really frustrating. Guess I have to take it in again.

Check the PCV lines in the engine and intake manifold. The crank case vent and fuel vent lines are connected. I had the same issue when my 3-stage manifold was installed. One of the vent lines wasn't secured all the way and leaked ever so slightly.

I apologize as this may be a dumb question. But are you referring to the lines running from the front and rear of the intake box? If not, what other lines are you referring to? Thanks.

Also, the fault code says gas tank ventilation system. So can the problem really be under the hood?

Yes the problem can be under the hood. This was the case in my car. The fuel vent goes to the intake manifold where engine can burn off the fumes. The lines I'm talking about are hard to see. There's one underneath the intake runners. That's the one that gave me problems.

Have the dealer perform a smoke test. The somke test is a machine that makes smoke and it is injected into the vacuum system. The smoke will comeout wherever the are leaks in the intake and vacuum system.

Alright, so I got a call from the dealer today, and low and behold, they said they finally found a leak up front as you mentioned. My SA told me he has to check whether it's covered. Shouldnt it be covered by either my CPO warranty or extended maintenance? If it isn't, I hope it isn't too expensive. I don't understand how replacing the valve was covered, but this wouldn't be.

You really should read the CPO warranty paperwork, there's alot of things the CPO warranty doesn't cover. And the maintenance plan only covers maintenance items, like oil, brakes, air filters, brake fluid, etc. It doesn't cover squat if something breaks.

Ok, so now I really need some advice. My car has been at the dealer for over a week now on this issue. As mentioned previously, they did find the micro leak. My SA was being cool saying that he is trying to find a way to get it covered, especially since it was my third time in for this issue, and everything else had been covered.

So I dropped it off last Thursday, and I talked to him Friday, and he said they found the issue, but he was going to take the weekend to work it out. Never gave me a quote or anything because he was going to try and get it covered. Went all day Monday without hearing from him, so I called. He said he was still trying to work it out, and he would call me Tuesday.

Well, I never heard from him, so I just called again. He said that he's still trying to work out getting it covered, but it comes down to that or giving me a quote. But he said that the hose has already been replaced and it looks like it's fixed. He said he would call me back today (which I'm not banking on). But how can they do the work without my consent? I've never received any quotes for the work and I have never ok'd anything. I understand he's trying to be nice and work this out, but why has my car been there for over a week? Any advice is really appreciated. Thanks.

Don't know anything about that. Any more info? Any other advice? Do I have to pay for the work that was done that I never received a quote on or ok'd?

Ok. So I just got a call from my SA. He said he was unable to get anything covered for this repair from BMW. So he said that since the parts and software update had already been done along with all the other tests and everything, that he would eat the labor on his part, and I just have to pay for parts. The total comes to $102. So should I just eat it, pay the parts, and be on my way?

hopefully that solves it...last time i had that problem ended up being an oil seperator in my e46. misdiagnosed about 4 times...

I think he said it was the hose, software upgrade, and one other part.

I would say you got off easy. I have the same problem. I am a couple of hundred miles from my carmax warranty expiring so I am concerned as to if it will be covered. It is more comprehensive than the CPO but you never know.
