What do you think of the reliability of our cars?? (n54)

So my car is hitting 60k miles soon. And i am debating on selling it. I love this car just as much as i hate it! I love the way it drives and feels for sure. But i hate the problems we run into: fuel pumps, waste gates, injectors, turbo seals, etc. I think this car has been more expensive to maintain than all of my past cars put together! (i've owned numerous cars)...so anyways, i feel like my car is going to need a lot of work soon. My intake valves are probably caked up, turbo seals are headed south (catless smoke). So i might just sell it before i get hit with a major bill! What are your guys' opinions?? I'd love to hear from the high mileage n54s!

What other expenses should i expect if i decide to keep this car?

Thanks guys!

80k miles with about 45 tune+fbo (no meth) and only had 1 hpfp go out when it was stock. I plan on driving it to the ground cause having no car note is the best way to save for a possible m3 purchase in the future.

If you take care of your car, it'll treat you well.

You have to remember you own an imported, high-performance vehicle. All Euro's are recognized for higher ownership costs, so it'd be foolish to expect a BMW to have Ford/Chevy maintenance costs.

If you want quality performance & budget maintenance, I'd recommend the new Mustang 5.0 (a naturally aspirated, American made, reliable design).

Been thinking of trading in the bimmer for a new 5.0
Performance, reliability, inexpensive and mods are cheap compared to bmw mods, good looks and lets not forget its one of the best sounding cars out there(personal preference of course)

They don't blow up even when making nearly 3x stock horsepower. That is a plus.

The crap with the HPFP, coils, injectors, etc. is pretty annoying, though.

hopefully you mean a f30 m3 at least.. if i got into an e92 m3
id feel like i DOWNgraded from my 335.. an f30 m3 in that light blue. now i could see myself looking at them eventually as theyll be able to make the power that my n54 makes with bolt ons.

Just know what the common failure points are:

-HPFP (not as common anymore, if anything I think this issue is resolved now)
-Injectors on late 07-Early 08 models, MAKE SURE THEY ARE INSTALLED AND CODED PROPERLY
-Water pump if you have an older model
-Serpentine belts if you have an early 07
-oil filter housing gaskets, valve cover gaskets
-wastegate rattle (not really an issue, more an annoyance)
-plugs/coils

Most of this stuff won't go bad for a long time if ever. It's a scary list, but given the reliability of the motor, I think it's a worthwhile tradeoff

Despite how you drive it or how you mod it, sometimes it just comes down to the car....

Some have all the problems and others glide on by. I'm at 93k and I have no intentions of getting rid of it soon. But it's also paid off, so putting that few hundred dollars away every month is good insurance.

conclusive of experience, plenty of time on these forums, and knowing others who beat the hell out of theirs, 60k miles is nothing on these cars. you dont have to worry about much with them, the maintainence is really fair compared to some other vehicles out there with equal performance. you have a long ways till considering selling if its strictly due to mileage imo.
