Text Messages
A while ago I seem to remember reading somewhere that if you had iDrive and BT, if your phone was sent a text message it would display on the screen.
Mine does not seem to do that - is it dependant on your phone?

Could be embarassing if someone was having an affair and it popped up on the screen while out with the wife!

Doesn't work with texts unfortunately .... on any phone. Would be a cool feature though ... although texting back with the idrive controller at 70mph on the M1 might not be best.

Slightly off beam but I have a Tom Tom 910 and that not only displays the text but the voice reads it out. Saw this for the first time at the week end and was amazed.

Text messages come through with certain phones that have 'Full' integration. I'm using a Nokia 6230i and also a SE K800i and these have full integration. This is on my current E46 Pro Nav, and I was told by the dealer that it would be the same when I get I drive in my next car. Perhaps he was talking thru his ... but someone may be able to clear this up?

As stated above I think this can happen with BMW online, but in that instance we are talking about texts sent to the car rather than to your mobile. |

its a shame because the technology exists and from what I understand it is fairly straightforward. My TOMTOM has that ability straight out of the box.

Windows based mobile phone
Slightly off topic, but I've just found this - http://www.jetwaremobile.com/index.htm, for anyone who has a Windows Mobile based phone, this will show the signal strength on the iDrive display.

I think text compatability would be unsafe. The purpose of the interface is to provide a handsfree kit ... I wouldn't want people reading (or even worse writing) texts while they are driving.
