On this note, my brother reckoned the 520d is only a second or so slower than 325d 0-60 because the 5 series is made from lighter materials - is that a load of rubbish ? (the statement not the materials/5 series !)
Initially the e60 530d came with a M57TUD30 engine (218hp)

http://www.e60.net/information/options/engines/M57D30/

This had a cast iron block.

The 330d got a revised engine from launch - the M57TU2D30 (231hp), with a lighter alloy block and improved ignition system.

http://www.e60.net/information/options/engines/M57TU2/

The 535d uses the M57TUD30, but it uses the M57TUD30 and the 335d uses the more powerful M57TU2D30.

More information here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M57

Since the 535d was introduced after the 530d engine was updated a lot of 535d owners were suprised that their vehicles were based on the older engine.

The new engine is a lot smoother and quieter as well.

As to the weight saving ... the e60 does have a lot of aluminium panels in the front end which work well to reduce the weight for such a big car. However the 520d is still 80kg heavier than the 320d and that shows in their 0-62 times.

In terms of your brothers comment - 'a second or so slower' is a big difference on 0-62 times.
