Question Quick Question On Euro Delivery...

in my situation if i do euro delivery im saving about $4k with the airline ticket to go to germany comming out to about $1k w/ 2 stops.

when you do euro delivery, is there a time set period you must stay there or can you go there pick up the car and next day drop it off at the port for shipment, come home, and save $3k?

not that i don't want to experience it, but i just don't have the time and if i can save $3k why not . the experience of picking the car at the welt is more than enough anyway.

EDIT: i just read on bmws euro delivery site that they have a special partnership with Lufthansa and a companion travels free. maybe their round trip fare might be less then what i found on kayak.

You can sign, drive the car across town and drop it off. But to do so would be missing the point. Personally, I don't think it's worth it for the savings alone.

I'll echo what others have said: if you're doing it for the savings alone, you're completely missing the point. If you don't have time then don't do it. If you want to do it then find time. Spend a week there or something.

Let me put it this way: the difference between ED invoice and US invoice is about $3,000 for a 3 series. Assuming you can get $500 over invoice on either deal, you're saving about $3k. Tickets to Europe for you would probably run about $800 in the Fall. So in total you'd save about $2k or so. I think you should take that 2k and invest it in a vacation. How often do you get to buy a new BMW?? Doing it for the savings alone is just so ridiculous IMO.

Does a Canadian can do ED with a US dealer? ED looks better in USA than Canada.

You sure BMW doesn't pay the airfare? Other ED programs pay the airfare, e.g. Volvo.

But Euro Delivery totally makes sense, if you can wait 6-8 weeks for build- Negotiate a price before you even mention Euro delivery with your dealer, the discounts come from the factory anyway. From EWR or JFK you can get to MUC on the cheap, especially in fall/late fall. Just don't try during Octoberfest, (although that would be a perfect time to go though probably not much driving, but a great introduction if you've never been to .de before).

No, but even if they did, the price of the airfare would be factored into the price you pay for the car. No real savings there.

Well said. I did mine almost 4 years ago and I still can't get the trip out of my mind. Going for the savings is NOT an experience and trust me...you would regret it!

Lufthansa companion program is not cheap....at minimum, if you fly end of October/November with a weekend stay (Thurs-Monday)...their are tickets under $600 (2 stops).

Good luck.

To answer your question, you can pickup and drop off the same day - in my book it is still worth it even if you do that - fly Thursday night, pickup the car Friday see Welt do the factory tour etc on Friday (as you can't do delivery or factory tour on Saturday), Saturday you can see a little more of the sights around Munich, the Olympic Park, Beer Garden etc, then fly home Sunday and you have had a unique experience and saved a few grand. Total worth it in my book, you can always do the longer vacation on the next one!!!

Just make sure you can drop off the car on Sunday - it is near the airport, so then you just get a cab from the drop off over to the airport. In the fall, you should be able to do a Saturday night stay ticket for in the $600 range, if you don't stay saturday night it will be almost double. You can get a hotel room for $100 a night in the area - it will be clean but small, but you shouldn't be in your room unless your sleeping anyway!

Have fun!

I don't think U.S. dealers are allowed to sell new cars to Canadians.

Things to think about:
Wait time for ED re-delivery (someone already mentioned this)
The Lufthansa tickets are 2-for-1, but you pay taxes/fees on the second ticket. Also these tickets are like the "Q" fare whereas a lot of the discount sites are selling "Y" fare. This means that even the 2-for-1 deal may not beat them out. I think the difference in the fares are refundability/changeability.
If you are financing the car, many financial institutions don't understand ED. So if you don't go through BMWFS, you'll have a hard time getting a good auto loan rate.

Just some things to think about.

ED

You can pay at the Welt 50 Euros and they will drop the car for you. Munich is great city to visit even for few days. Is it PITA to fly to Europe just to pick up the car? Probably so, but you can make fun out of it. Go to Munich, visit beer gardens, have some good food. I buy all my cars trough ED, but my wife is German and we go there for vacation, so itís no brainer for me. Good luck what ever you decide to do.

You owe it to yourself (and us) to at least stay there over the weekend to experience Munich. It took about 6 weeks for me to get my car back once I dropped it off in France.

Make sure and find a good dealer too, cause it can be a nightmare if they have no idea what they're doing. And contrary to another post, you can't negotiate a price and then magically say, Oh BTW I want it in Munich.

Actually...

When we did European Delivery on our 2008 328i, I did exactly that. Fly in, stay overnight, pick up the car the next day, drop off the same day, fly back the next day. Had arranged it over the weekend so that I flew out Saturday and landed back in by Tuesday night. Since the pick-up was in off-season (First week of November), round trip flight and hotel cost $900. On the 328i as we configured it, it was a $7,000 saving on top of U.S. MSRP. (paid $500 above European Delivery INVOICE)

So all it cost me was $900 in flight/hotel, $20 in train/bus tickets, $15 in food and 2 day's pay (vacation time). While it would have been nicer to have taken a week's European vacation, the fact that my wife couldn't fly at the time made it impossible. Worked out either way.

I wouldn't recommend it, but if you're looking purely at the savings rather than the actual experience...It can be done.

You are going to regret doing European Delivery without seeing Europe. Make a vacation out of it.

Think about it,

You: Oh guys I just came back from Europe.
Other person: Oh where did you go? What did you do?
You: Oh I picked up my car and that's it.
Other person: WTF?

Unless you are incredibly rich (which you are not or you would be not consider going for just financial reasons), you have limited opportunities to go half way across the world to Europe. I believe everyone should travel and it offers an education on the World as a whole that cannot be taught in school.
