This is a very REASONABLE diagnosis for the events the OP is describing. I've seen a handful of aftermarket oil cap rings leak, that is not too uncommon. I've also seen at least half a dozen belt failures that caused theses symptoms. What happens is that oil gets on the pulley, then the belt slips off the pulley and gets jammed up behind it. This results in the pulley seizing/cracking/exploding and the belt gets shredded and tangled up behind the pulleys. This is usually not the end of the world but in a few cases I've seen, it's gets shredded and jammed behind the crank pulley. This is the worst case because then bits of shredded rubber belt get sucked/forced in the front crank seal and end up in the oil pan where they can (if they're small enough pieces) get stuck in the oil pump screen and in very unfortunate places. If it gets past the oil pump screen, chances are very slim you'll ever get it all out of the motor and it will need a new one.

I'm not saying this is the OP's fault... it's certainly the body shop's fault who installed the aftermarket filter/ring, HOWEVER.... why was the body shop doing an oil change to begin with? And why were they using non-OEM parts?

It gets tiresome to read thread after thread of "the dealers is satan" posts, I'm only chiming in here because I think in your case, the dealer is actually right, and going after BMW for this would be wrong.

I also work for a BMW dealer as the warranty admin. We just had to replace a guy's engine in a F01 because he had his oil change outside of the dealer and they use an aftermarket oil filter for an E65. The filter broke apart and went through the engine clogging everything. He called his auto insurance and they covered the bill. So maybe i would contact your insurence if the place you took it to wont take care of it for you

$13.00 oil filter from the dealer, a lot cheaper than $21,000 engine. If you bought the filter and brought it to the shop, then shame on you, but if they bought the filter, I would look at your paper work from them for a filter number and see what car that filter actually fits. If it isnt for a 2011 BMW 335, then I would sue that shop for whatever damages have been done to your car. Thats just me though, I would not stop until I either had a new engine, or a new car...neither of which would be at my expense. Unless of course you bought the filter, then I feel bad for you. Might as well call the insurance company and have them cover it.

I didn't buy the oil filter. It was a long time a go so i didn't keep the paper work but like i said i have the filter/o ring that was in my car saved in a bag and the dealer did say it was an aftermarket one and the cause of all this..
I' not saying anything about the dealers and if they are trying to rip me off or not. I just want my car back. I just posted this to get other opinions on what to do..

Bmw is trying to void my warranty as well becasue their records only show that I have one oil change with them. So I am taking them the records of the other places I've gone.

first- if ur car is an 11 ur oil changes should have been included by the dealer with purchase of the car.

2nd- if you were in a front end collision.....it does not take much to knock a pulley out of alignment....if one pulley is out of line it could effect the whole system. Obviously if one was not aligned properly, it wouldnt go bad instantly...the more u drove on it the more it was probably wearing or having an effect.

3rd- that sucks bro...good luck, whatever u do dont pay 21000 for a new engine.

Which Dealer? Seems like maybe they are trying to screw you. Kinda sucks when you cant even trust them to take care of you correctly.

To the OP, if you go to the place maybe they will have it on record or something. Worth a shot if you havent already called them raising hell. Would be funny to go up there being all nice and stuff and then the next day call them back and tell them youre sueing them, then thank them for the copy of your invoice, lol. I can be pretty evil sometimes, haha!

I would calmly go into the Body shop and ask for a copy of the invoice, not letting on as to why. By the way, wouldn't your car insurance have a copy of the invoice? That body shop had no business changing the oil and filter. I think the dealership will testify in court that the aftermarket filter was the cause. I had one shop testify for me in court against another shop when the first shop installed the transmission wrong on a car I had years ago.

There are 3 possible reasons for OP's predicament.

1. The dealership is correct it may just be that the stupid aftermarked oil change fucked shit up
2. The accident knocked the pulleys out of place and finally gave out
3. There is some freaky thing wrong with the pulleys with nothing to do with the oil change or the accident and the dealership should fix this under warranty but for some reason or another are trying to screw OP up the ass.

I'm slightly leaning towards #1, based on boostd92's explanation of his opinion that a dealership is not out to screw someone on this magnitude. Assuming it is #1, this should put enough of a scare into anyone thinking of doing a oil change outside of the BMW dealership. I know I am already putting that thought to rest. No way do I want anything to happen that the BMW dealership can blame on someone else. But what I'm wondering why the hell the OP even had someone else do a oil change when the dealership does it for free under free maintenance? Too impatient for the car to say it needs an oil change and just want it done? I feel the same way and now I'm definitely going to cough up the money to have my local dealership do it.

no need for the worry. I've learned my lesson. I'm pretty sure that its only the oil pump that needs replacing. But i'm still getting it inspected.
Only get the oil change done from LTBMW or dealership. (even if you have to pay money)
