My xi has less than 3000 miles and I'm geting like 21 combined. 75% hwy. I've been using 89 octane though. and the engine's nowhere near broken in yet, and I'm also guessing I'd do better with 92 or 93 octane.

I've run 87 and 93 octane in my car and get better mileage when running 87.

You do realize running 87 in the 335i is pretty bad news bears right? You can get away with it in a 328i since its a NA engine but for the twin turbo its a whole 'nother story.

UHm, I don't think using using 87 gas is a good thing for your high compression engine at all. You may save up to 8 bucks per tank but it's totally not worth.

so far i have approximately 8500 miles on the car... combined I have 20mpg. i could definitely get it higher but throughout the 6 months of ownership, driving WOT is hard to resist.

even today's morning commute, i started off at 410 miles left on a full tank, ended up at work (30 highway miles + some stop/go traffic) with 416 miles left. i love it!

car just pulls a lot of timing and doesnt make any kinda boost.

Ive had my tank filled with 87 by some dumb ass gas station attendant in NJ (refused to pay for it as well...got off with that one), and car just had no power.

Just cranked the a/c and burned through it in a matter of days.

The best Ive ever done was 510 on a tank of gas...East Coast meet in VA...topped off before I left, didnt fill up again til I was outside Lincoln Tunnel.

And I was using my a/c at times as well.

How the engine knows to pull timing is when the gas octane is too low and the fuel pings or prematurely detonates in the engine. The problem is the engine is constantly dynamically adjusting and periodically tries advancing timing in case the higher octane gas is and when pinging occurs then retards engine timing yet again.

Running regular in a 335i for one tank only causes minor nearly insignificant damage, especially if there aren't any high boost, high compression, full throttle driving but if you use regular constantly the damage adds up over time. Plus regular gas normally causes a decrease in gas mileage since the engine makes less power and as a result the drive needs to apply more throttle to accelerate/cruise at the same rate as the engine running on regular.

NA engines designed for premium gas intake can run on regularly with much less chance of damage than forced induction (supercharge or turbo'ed) engines tuned to run on premium but being fed a diet of regular.

exactly. Which is why I made it a point to burn through it as soon as possible.

FYI - I had the opportunity to drive two 325i auto trans loaners this week. I figure these are seeing standard commuter duty just like mine, and they were only indicating 21.8 mpg - about 0.5 mpg better than my 335Xi 6MT.

To the OP... You do realize that 11.5lt/100km is quite different from 24.5mpg? It's more like 20.4mpg.

The conversion is mpg = 235/ [lt/100km] or vice versa.

Approaching 3,000 miles and last tank was 22.1 mpg (341 total miles). Overall (~10 fill-ups) I'm getting 20.5 mpg (30% city/70% hwy).

Ok i live in toronto & i'm averaging around 11.5 which as per sum1 who did the math is around 20.4mpg. I think that sucks cuz i hardly drive it hard.
However I really do think there is a diffence between Shell v-power & Sunoco's 94 octane...does any1 agree or know anything about this?

European fuel is different than ours.

Look at the octane ratings...

U.S. :
Average = 87
Mid = 89
High = 93

Europe :
Average = 95
Mid/High = 98
High = 100

Granted that they measure differently and their rating is usually a little higher than it would be here (ex, Europe 95 is like U.S. 91), it's still a better blend in the end.

So yah, of course you'll get better mileage in Europe.
