OIL TOP UP help please

Hi guys, about 5 months ago I had to top up my oil, I bought Castrol Edge Professional BMW LL01 5W-30 at my dealer...
However, the warning light minimum oil has come up again last night after I drove home....
I have not had to service the car in between these 5 months..

I am looking to purchase new oil to top up.

1. Can I top up with a DIFFERENT type of oil? Or will this wreck the engine?
Eg. I read people are using Mobil 1 Synthetic etc but if the one that's already in there is a different type is this bad????

2. What is the best oil to use?

edit; btw im in Sydney Australia if that makes any difference
Any help would be greatly appreciated before the shops close! haha

Any good quality fully synthetic of the correct viscosity will be fine for topping up.
