Till I graduate and pick up an M3. At that point, I'm rolling this thing into a lake.

Probably another...2-3 years? I finally pay off the car this year (08 that was bought CPO in 11). Just hit 100,000 miles too. I would like some time with no car payment.

I want to keep it but if I do I feel like I need to take the power to the next level which also means LSD, suspension, etc.
I could easily spend $5k-$7k to upgrade it how I would like to but the problem is I wont see much money back if I sell so it puts me in a spot where I would feel like I need to hold onto it longer to get more value out of all the money I spent.

If I keep it how it sits I'll get bored with it quick (kinda am already) but it will make it easier to go back to stock and sell.

These decisions would be much easier if these cars didnt lose value so quickly.
If I would have bought a vette and thrown on a procharger I could hold on onto that car for a bit and not lose much money, even on the supercharger.
Why would you not keep it, and continuing modding it as your "fun car"... looks like you have other vehicles from your signature.

and, well, because Racecar.

I know it doesn't make sense for most to have multiple vehicles, but at the same time... if the car is paid off, why would anyone really ever get rid of a car and not just keep 'adding' to their stable? Cars lose money, so at some point, my CAR is worth more than the MONEY I could get for it.
I mean, I still want a e92 M3, but would still keep my 328 as more of a DD or "beater"... no point in getting rid of the 328... I hope I can keep this thing running (with reasonable effort) to 200,000 miles!!

I tend to agree with this logic. As an added bonus for those of us with teen age kids, we can put the kids' insurance policy on the older cars and save tons.

They have a wastegate "unpleasant noise" recall for 8 years/82k miles... so you can get new turbos for free thru BMW.

They also have a battery cable recall

A HPFP 10 year/120k mile recall

Depreciation at that point is negligible.

At the moment one of my cars is parked in my driveway with no plates/reg/insurance... I just don't drive it... it costs me nothing.

I have 250k miles on that fully built '92 eclipse GSX by RRE. I've owned it since my HS friend sold it to me with 60k miles on it.

I just moved closer to work and now my commute is walking distance, so I'm anticipating getting several more years out of my car only putting about 50 miles on it per week for errands.

That's an eyesore in some communities...when the plates come off, the homeowners' association goes to work to remove the vehicle....

Till I feel it's time. Bought my 2010 new and it's been 6 years, 1 month, and 10 days since the first day I drove it home and I still enjoy driving every mile in this bad boy.

Mine is 10 years old. My answer would be forever. I will repair what is needed rather than having a new high balance on a new car. Avoiding a major repair due to cost for a new car is just plain stupid if the reason is to "avoid headache." Not having one on a newer car is not guaranteed either and it does happen on low mileage cars and worst part is, on top of those repairs you have spent more money getting the car or you owe a balance for it.

Your post is common sense...it's funny, any other country than the USA, and that's how people behave. Here's as long as you can get the loan, it doesn't matter what you're getting, nor what the interest rate is.

(what's the interest rate anyway on a 2009 vehicle, it's certainly not going to be 1.49% like it is for a brand new or late model used car.)

I haven't kept a car longer than 2 years, so far. That might be a very deep personal problem. Lol.

This car is under warranty until 2021...

ah, good ol' DSM days! Ha.

My first car was a 2g '98 eclipse... full kit, wheels, system, H&R race springs... Oh yeah baby, high school was good. can you say fast and the furious?

Those were the days.
Why the hell doesn't anyone make any fun cars anymore like that? Those GSX/Talon's were awesome.. 1st and 2nd gens. My buddy had a 1g that put down over 400whp...

Gone are the days of Eclipse/MR2/Integra/240/civic/jettas/etc ... obviously can still get civics and Jetta's but they are just not the same.

is your 8yr/82k mile factory warranty on the turbos already up? Otherwise, I would think you could have the turbos and wastegates replaced under BMW's dime

3.49% is the lowest I have seen thru credit unions. That's what I got before. There may be lower rates somewhere I am not sure.
