Best Air Filter with Cobb
Guys,
I'm purchasing the Cobb accesport within the next few days. I think I'll buy it straight from PTF, so I can get a discount on the pro-tune (unless anyone knows of where to get one where I'll save money when paying the full $299 for the pro tune). My car is bone stock right now. I'm not planning on doing more modding (at least not for a while) after this. I do however only use 93 octane. My question is, should I get a DCI or just a drop-in? I keep reading different things. Let me state though that I DONT CARE ABOUT THE WHOOSH SOUND. So if that's the only advantage of a DCI over the drop-in, thats pointless to me. So DCI or Drop-in. If DCI, which one? Thanks. |

Since you only going to be runing Stage 1 maps then a K&N drop in filter will do the job
I have a buddy of mine runing Stage 2+ race map with stock intake and a drop in filter and traping 118-119 in a 1/4 mile IMO, if you do decide to mode upgrade your FMIC first (1st) |

Of all the OE parts that are insufficient (hpfp, lpfp, fmic come to mind) the airbox actually isnt that bad...once you clear certain boost characteristics imo youre leaving real power on the table with the stock box, but on stg1 otherwise stock were probably talking about 5whp max for a dci. Lets put it this way: if i hadnt gotten my dci literally for free, id be using the stock airbox, im running stg1+fmic aggressive which is a good deal stronger than the stg1 ots maps. If you dont go dci id just leave it, aftermarket panel filters are a bit dubious imo

I have the BMS air filter running Cobb stage 1 aggressive with no problems. I didn't go with DCIs because they look so cheap and sloppy in the engine bay.

If you're gonna mod beyond the tune, get a legit intake. If you want the best "bang for buck" intake, BMS DCIs. If you want something more visually pleasing, the aFe DCI or Injen DCI are both quality pieces.

You seem like you want to pretty much keep your car stock for the most part. I think if your just running stage 1 then I would keep the stock air box and put a K&N drop in filter as its not that bad of an intake to begin with

So you want to look for intakes whose filters have external and inverted air entry surfaces. That's why DCI works the best for the money. Disregard anyone who says "I don't like them for the looks"! Power gains are power gains -period. Other makes you may want consider AFE, Ingne, Dinan (expensive), and BMS. I've used the drop-in types too (k&N) but you'll only gain over and above a certain of increased air volume compared to OEM. Someone has mentioned the OEM design is pretty good, and I agree with that statement. But to maximize the potential difference, one of the stated aftermarket intakes will best match your Cobb tune.

I think I'm just going to go with a K&N drop-in.
It sounds like this will be more than enough to run Stage 1 aggressive with very minimal difference from a DCI, if any. Thanks for all the replies. Now I'll just figure out the best place to purchase. |

I think that this becomes an important factor if all he is gonna run right now is tune only. I wouldn't want my DD reaching high temps from driving spiritedly and we all know that would happen with DCI. |

If you'll run minimal modifications I'd highly suggest a solid FMIC such as the Evolution Racewerks which I'm also considering as I can get all the rest of the piping from the FMIC to the intake manifold along with it all in one package. It also has a shroud to direct airflow better into the FMIC. I've seen it on a number of local cars here and it looks really solid. Helix is another great option but I'm strongly leaning towards ER. If I were doing my modifications over again I would've done the FMIC first.
