jb4 with downpipes map 0 for service causes CEL

hello, sorry if this has been answered but i am a bit confused. i just got a jb4 and a set of downpipes. from my understanding map 0 is what you need to put it on when you go to service because thats the only way the OBDII port works. if you do that then when you go for service wont you get a check engine light from the downpipes?

Map 0 puts the computer back to stock. If you want to go into the dealer and get warranty work or maintenance work without them knowing you have downpipes you have to remove them. With the jb4 in map 0 you are turning off the jb4.

I still think thats a terrible idea to show up to bmw with it in map 0. Bmw reps are not stupid; They know all the tricks and how these things work. All they have to do is do the basics for map switching to test if the car has a piggy back. For the procede you just push the cruise control up, down, in, or out and it will do something. I'm just not sure the commands on a jb4, but bmw reps just learn all this online the same way we would, so if you happen to get a smart rep that is not cool with it he can send your vin to bmwna and void that whole cars warranty.

You have a few choices.

1) Put it in map 0 right when you get there and hope they dont take it for a ride.
2) Get the bms downpipe fix and run that when going to the dealer.
3) Remove the downpipe and install the stock downpipe to prevent the code from popping up.
4) remove the jb4 and downpipe for a piece of mind of not worrying about loosing your warranty or getting any aftermarket parts noticed and reported.

I'd do option 4 if you care about your warranty. If you don't then it doesn't matter what option you do. Since your trying to put it in map 0 im guesing you do.

This is why I tell people over and over with warranties that you should not install an offroad downpipe (If they are trying to keep their warranty). If You don't want to reinstall the stock pipe on every visit to bmw or pay for it to be removed then why did would you buy an Off Road Version of a downpipe and install it when you knew before hand that your risking your warranty.

thank you, this is kind of what i was thinking, on there site it says to switch it to map 0 for service. if you dont have downpipes this isnt as bad since no code will show up, but with downpipes putting it on map 0 seems like a toss up whether or not the dp code will show up

for option 2, would you reccomend removing the tune and putting in the dp fix? or running map 0 with dp fix in place?

I would run the dp fix and remove the jb4 entirely. Its really easy to install and remove so its better to be safe than sorry. The only time they would notice the missing cats would be on a lift. If they are lifting the car and inspecting it from underneath then its questionable if the rep notices it or overlooks it. So as long as there not doing anything that would require them to get under the car then you'll be fine with the DP fix.

With a DP fix it tricks the computer and makes it think that you have cats which is what prevents the codes from ever appearing. Just dont leave the dp fix on for long. I've heard its only good for temp situations like service, smog ect since it messes with the 02 signals which can mess up the air/fuel ratio

great thank you very much. on a completely different note, does the jb4 save your settings if you remove it from the car?

I dont believe so, but its easy to re-setup. You wont loose your maps or anything you just might have to re-setup the boost gauge hack if your using that or others.

Someone with a jb4 that has done this would be able to help you more.

Settering wheel settings will stay on the JB4 when you remove it, as well as the settings you select in the JB4 interface on your PC. If you reset your settings using the PC software, it will only reset those settings from the PC side, not the steering wheel settings.

If you clear codes right before the visit, the CEL light won't show up until after you drive it for a bit. It really depends on what service you are having done. I left everything in for an oil change/low pressure fuel sensor replacement under CPO. Cleared codes right before drop off. Disabled steering wheel controls, put it in map 0. They didn't give me any problems. Now if the service is for something major, then yes it would be best to remove everything.

How do you disable the steering wheel controls for the JB4? How do you re-enable them?

IIRC Set Future Use D = 1, set to 0 when you want to re-enable.

it usually takes a day to two for it to turn on in my experience. You should have no worries about that in my opinion.

Connect your laptop to your jb4 usb cable. Open the interface and go to user settings. You'll see it there. Future Use D, set to 1.

For more info on the future use options, look here. Sorry I didn't go in depth on what it is. This should explain everything.
