Taking off auto shift knob? E90, pre facelift.

it is the same for all 3 series bmw's, my brother has an 08 e92 335i and I have an 09 e90 335i m sport.
From 2006-2010 and on, e90,e91,e92, and e93.
It is the same procedure.
all you have to do is pull up really hard on the shifter in one jolt, make sure you are holding in the button on it, and dont punch yourself in the head.
It doesn't really matter whether you do it in park or neutral. I prefer neutral because in park it is easier to smack into the hvac control panel and damage something

Honestly I punched myself on the mouth. So be careful when you do it. Make sure your head stay far away.

I did mine yesterday. I put it in sport mode, turned off the engine, leaned in over it and grabbed with both hands. When it let loose, it came out into my gut, not my teeth. No harm that way. The new one seems just as tight as the old one.

Has anyone replaced the oem Auto knob with anything aftermarket?
It's so big, it's really starting to bug me.

When you guys are replacing the auto knob, are you holding the "trigger" in and pulling up or just grabbing the whole thing without squeezing the "trigger"?

Mine came off without holding the trigger. Who ever suggested to brace your arm on the armrest and use it as leverage to pull the knob off was spot on. Needed a lot of force and used two hands but it came off and was no where near damaging any facial parts or car parts! BTW performance knob looks and feels awesome!

Yeah, this can stump the timid. Most people want to just pull on it. What it takes is a quick hard jerking motion upward. Its just a friction sleeve that holds it in place and by jerking up on the shifter it pops right off. Those who try to pull on it with steady pressure never get the momentum to get it off.
