tyre choice

Hi everyone, a new member here. I recently bought my first bmw (2010 318d Exclusiv Ed.) and I'm about to get new tyres for it. I've used michelin crossclimate tyres (on a passat) and I'm really happy with them. I drive mostly on twisty roads of northern Scotland, where temps dont go above 5'C until around June, so I'm interested in tyres that can handle frequent morning frost and occasional snow once in a while.

I want to buy the CrossClimate's , and when i search for them on tyre websites, i get the following results (for 17'' rim):
225/45 R17 91V (front/rear)
225/45 R17 91V (front) + 255/40 R17 94V (rear)

Why would/should the rear tyres be different from front ones?

thanks!

First of all you should try "tires" haha. And the rear ones are wider if you have sport package. I would personally check your tire sizes on your car. And if you are talking about the michilien cross climate that are winter tires certified for all year use they seem like good tires. Or the DWS are good also

Well, Tyre is not wrong spelling for tire, in UK they spell it Tyre, here is an

I have Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3s. Couldn't be happier with them. But we don't get a lot of snow.

...now that we exchanged some jokes (i think), let me just say that I keep reading about the Crossclimate tyres and they seem to be the real deal... but when i use Michelin's little "compatibility app", it doesn't show me this model as option at all....
they are definitely made in the size i want, but would that app in some way suggest the tyre won't fit?

Go to tire rack and input your car. It'll show you the choices that will conservatively fit. You can generally go one size bigger. Ex: they say 265 but 275 fits.

Ehh it depends on the offset of your wheels and the tire brand. I can go 265 with PSS. Which were rubbing a little but the liner was pulled out a little after I changed the brake sensor. Just popped it back and no more rubbing. But still I definitely couldn't fit 275.

I use 275 rear Michelin PSS on 19x9.5 with 30 et offset and lowered 1/2" past stock sport suspension. No rubbing and I can fit a finger between tire and fender well.

Mine is 18×9.5 35 mm offset. Also about the same lowering. Weren't lci cars able to have wider tires without rubbing? Idk maybe I'm thinking of the f30's
