My 335d - Nurburgring last weekend

http://www.vimeo.com/1350389

720p HD Video of a recent lap at 'The Ring'

Sorry I now realise the timer is wrong, actual laptime from Bridge to Gantry is about 9:20ish.

I didn't time the lap, so was quite pleased to find out the time after reviewing the video.

I know in the right hands it could go much, faster, I just love the fact that 1000 miles, 5 laps of the ring and lots of spirited driving to and from the ring and I still averaged 28mpg .....

The car has an e-map remap, I had no problems at all, a few passengers were extremley surprised by the 40-130 acceleration. on the autobahn I hit a gps 165mph a couple of times ....

The bong on the video is the limiter set at 130mph, the video camera was a headrest mounted Sony TGR3, full 1080HD camera with Image stabilisation.

Please be kind ....

Nice vid Bob.

Did you even try to get some sort of insurance for it or just sacked it off?

£490 for 2 days, 30k cover with a 3k excess ....

But in the end I chose to take the risk, my insurance may or may not have covered an accident, I don't intend to drive fast enough to find out .... hence my comments on the video, if it was fully insured I could go a lot quicker ....

I may consider a race hire next year, a Clio or Caterham for 2 half days ...

You actually found insurance for going around the Nordeschleife. Thats amazing. Track day ins' companies dont cover it as it aint a ''track day'' and normal insurance companies run a mile. Who was it bob then? I really want to know for when i go as i wont go without insurance. I insured mine for my track day at snetterton. Well worth it i believe. I mean if you did have a prang at least you know you can go get a similar car.

Regarding you not driving fast enough to have a n accident. Its not always oneself that can crash, some one could spin right infront of you etc.

This was my third trip in as many years, its awesome just being there, never mind once you get on the track. Saturday was wet, but quiet, so we had a bit of fun with the traction half off, just took it easy and slid a few bends ;-)

Sunday was bright, sunny and stupidly busy, had to push hard just so I wasn't overtaken all the time ...

No it wouldnt mate, as there insurance company would not pay out, One because they span and YOU hit them, Two because there driver was on the ring.

Trackday insurance only cover damage to your own vehicle no matter whose fault or what happened.

Everyday is a school day, looks like you have spent sometime investigating this. I'm of the school of thought that my standard insurance covers me for the ring as its a public toll road. I can't see an specific exclusions for de-restricted toll roads etc.

The best plan is to drive within your own limits, be aware of everyone around you and stay out of trouble. If you don't want to take the risk or can't afford the gamble then stay away from a track.

Like i said. ID trackday all day long. Enjoy it and pretty quick around a track in whatever.

I would not risk my expensive car without insurance though. You can bet your bottom dollar your insurance company has a get out clause for that place. I dont think there is one insurance company that doesnt. I thought you had actually found a company that would insure specifically for the ring.

I think risking a car with the presumption your normal policy will cover you is pretty foolish. If you can afford to wrap a 40k car then fork out for another I doubt that you would be driving a 40k car. Probably a much more expensive car. To be able to throw that money down a drain withot worry.

AWESOME place and a MUST for any avid car fan. The drive there alone is brilliant too!

Ok Bob. Once again great vid. Can you tell me whether the ins company you posted a link for is a company that 100% cover the ring or just an insurance company you are with currently?

Yep they cover the ring, I filled in the form online stating the day and location of the track day, they sent a quote back within 48 hours. With hindsight cover for 2 days for £500 was a pretty good deal ..

Let me know how you get on ...

Also you might as well get ADAC cover, £60 for a year, if you have a prang they will get you off the track ...

I've heard about ADAC cover, very good deal and they even take your car back to UK if required

I set the limit 'bong' for 130mph, I hit it at 2 points, so my guess is probably a speedo 135mph. It feels a hell of a lot faster though.

I scared the life out of an EVO8 as well, I let him go first out of the cones at the start of the lap, he shot away, but by about 60mph, I was reeling him back in. Bearing in mind I had 4 in the car as well .... I got round him, but in the end bottled it and let him pass, he was much quicker in the bends ...

I suspect some of the M3 and CSLs must be 145 + though, GT3s around 160mph, I just don't have the nerve or skill ...

Are you going with the Evotechnik guys ?

It is a great place, and a BMW is the perfect car for it (335d that is)....

Here are some photos of my car at The RING back in June, and I'm also heading back in August....

LOVED IT!
