Tweeter upgrade question
Right, got all the tweeter bits for an e91. (a point of interest is that the e91 window trims (the whole thing) came with seals in the triangular bits already. Im not sure whether this was just a bmw mistake or they all do - i have a couple of spare seals for tweeters if anyone is interested).
Anyway, i make sure it's not about to pour down and thanks to all the threads on here managed to get all the door off and replace the trim (getting the trim back on is really awkward on an e91, i've no idea whether there is a technique i'm missing?) But to cut a long story short i cannot find anywhere to plug the tweeter into on the mid speaker. I've enclosed a photo below but it makes no sense. The line comes in, there's a capacitor there and a connection to the mid, but nowhere to plug the tweeter connector in. I assume i'm just being really dense but can someone who's been here already give me a hand? There's a metal covering next to the blue connector that looks like it might have a connector inside but i'll need to take the assembly apart to see if it does and i thought i'd check here first. many thanks! paul |

I'm pretty sure if you took taht metal clip/cover off you'd find the connection for the tweeter underneath. On mine there was defiantly two connections on the mid-range, one input, one output to tweeter.

Paul, I have an E91 too and have just done the same tweeter upgrade, along with some cursing and general threats aimed at inanimate objects...namely those surrounds. My tweeter just plugged into a spare location socket as per the other suggestions, must be under that plate.

Thanks everybody, i will give it another go later. Seems a bit weird though because i'm not sure that a crossover is involved with that extra plug but can't tell unless i looked underneath.
And ziplex, those surrounds are a nightmare - i can totally relate to that! I really appreciate the help from you all cheers paul |

Paul,
If there is a wee "bump" in the tweeter cable then that is a capacitive crossover. I think i saw one in the cable in another thread but im not sure. So its on the cable, not the mid range. Regards Andy |

So you guys recommend this for a standard professional system upgrade?
I am well out of my Sub'n'amp days like but if i thought these would add a touch of sparkle i would go for it. Did one of you chaps mention that it killed the bass a wee bit? Jinj |

Andy,
Whilst i haven't completed my THA555 + SWS + Tweeter upgrade i do know that this base system compared to the Prof HiFi in my last 120d is chalk and cheese. I think the base system is a crime against the ears, i used to really enjoy listening to music in my car but not at the moment. I suspect it's only when i get everything installed will i get back what i've lost. And i hasten to add whilst i like bass, i'm not a bass head or talking about making things rattle. Just a decent system to listen to all sorts of music. Plus music will take my mind off reading the MPG gauge. cheers paul |

If I had to make one change to the standard system, it would be adding the L7 tweeters first.
Easy, cheapish and makes a big difference to the quality. Amps and SWS-8's etc are also a good move, but the tweeter upgrade impressed me the most. |

A bmw plug dude.................with wire on it.
Just noting that as my car is le bastardo E91, then i dont get the option to replace just the mirror back triangle, i have to replace the whole fecking window surround. Fark that JJ |

No, the tweeter wire has a plug on the end of it, forget the 'bump' bit, this plug just 'plugs' into the spare socket already in situ' on the mid range speaker. You don't have to cut any wires....just plug it in.

JJ.......your response made me smile, it really is a simple job. Hard to explain but with the bits in front of you it makes sense. If you're prone to cursing it'll make you do that for sure but 'tis easy really, and worth it.

Interesting....
can you do this on the standard sound system? how much for the tweeters? and what new parts do you need? do they plus into the cheapo mids (looks like the picture above has the tweeter plug blanked off with the bracket - it is really wired under there?) i assume a new speaker cover for the mirror housing - how much - anything else needed? is it worth upgrading the mid speakers too? can you just plug in HiFi versions or are you then into faffing with amps and impedances etc. - how much? |

Yes this is ideal for the standard 6 speaker system, plug and play...no worries about impedance etc, and there is definately a socket on the mid to recieve the tweeter plug. Part no's for E91 touring.......... B65.13.6.964.013 speaker-set £39.81 B51.33.7.171.201 Cover £18.26 B51.33.7.171.202 Cover £18.26 you'll need 2 x speakers, even though they are called 'set' and one of each of the 'covers' prices don't include vat.
