What is the purpose/function of the BOV???

If I were you I would look up a few videos on how turbos work, once you understand their entire operation everything will make sense.

Check out "Engineering Explained" videos on the subject.

a quick explanation is to release built up pressure from the turbo after throttle closure.

you can run a car without a "BOV" or a Recirc Valve, but you will get turbo chatter which can kill a turbo. but then you could ask why ... it gets to much to explain quickly better off having a Google and just read up on it. Turbos have been around so so many years information can be found everywhere on them and how they work. they haven't changed much since they was first used.
