F30 3-Series vs W204 C-Class - competition hotting up now

The configurator for the F30 is up on the BMW UK website, and I had a quick look at my favourite model, the 328i vs the closest equivalent C-Class.

A basic 328i SE with sat-nav added and not a lot else comes to a little over £30,500, and as standard this has the usual stuff you would expect, like Bluetooth, USB, climate, parking sensors and so on. You also get the 245bhp turbo petrol engine with 6sec 0-60 yet 40+mpg combined and 149g/km CO2.

The nearest equivalent C-Class is the C250CGI Elegance 125 Edition. Not quite the performance with 204bhp and 7sec 0-60, but economy and CO2 is much the same and you get the nice 7-spd auto as standard, plus a slightly more sumptious interior and sat-nav as standard. Price is much the same at £30,500.

Not seen any F30 reviews yet, but I suspect this is going to be a close run battle between these two, and if I were buying now I'd have a tough choice I think, at least on paper.

Will be interesting to see how the F30 is rated in reviews and by early owner experiences!

I haven't even seen the new Merc but it wouldn't even be on my radar.

One thing I've just noticed on the BMW website is the F30 fuel tank is smaller.

E90: 63 ltr
F30: 60 ltr

Me neither. Do people really choose between the two? They are cars for very different target markets aren't they?

Most of the people I know with Mercs wouldn't be seen dead in a BM and vice-versa

I think some people do consider both, I did and still do. Love both marques.

Historically, yes, the types of buyers looking at the C-Class and the 3 were very different. MB have tried hard to make their cars better to drive and more attractive to the sort of people that would normally buy BMWs, and there are a number of people on here looking at both. Plus with some of the ridiculously low leasing rates MB are offering at the moment getting into a C-Class can be cheaper than the equivalent BMW.

Mercedes are getting sharper and sharper to drive well the BMWs are getting softer and softer, I think you will find a few people moving to Mercedes, but you will always get some who are just very brand loyal and won't look at anything else.

Contract hire deals, Mercedes are far, far cheaper. That will sway a lot of people.

Has anyone tried playing with the 328i Modern? And got passed the interior? I think I got a little bit of sick in my mouth.

Yeah the beige steering wheel and dash are pretty grim!

WTF is 'Modern'? Yes, i'll have a new car that isn't modern please?

Why does 'Sport' have no sporty engines....

Now I think the names are pretty good, I do think the modern looks fresh and modern, and if you see all the concept cars they do seem to be going back to a lighter interior again.
Personally I would take the 'modern' interior but would want it on the M-Sport body, wouldn't have the full grain wood but would like Piano Gloss Black.

Black or the nice blue/grey on the X1 on an F31 touring M-Sport with a 'modern' interior would be a great car for me.
I would also have the twin turbo 4cyl 8 speed auto, think it makes a lot of sense these days.

On the sports model, Why do you need to have the cheap red plastic trim or if you pic the black piano trim instead off the red trim you get the chrome plastic shit around the top of the air vents. All I want is the black piano finish

Not too keen on the new interior as rich1068 mentioned it's doesn't look as nice a place to sit as the E90. I did think the same when I first clapped eyes on the new E90 when it first came out.

I would consider the C220 coupe or the C220 when I’m due to replace the E91 if the lease deals are the same.

Will the Msport model be out before July next year? Are BMW even bring out a Msport model or are they sticking to the "Sport" model?

Lease deals are much better on Mercedes. Always are.

The M-Sport....

I think a few on here are a bit set in their ways, I don't think it is exciting exterior wise and looks like they have only upgraded the front midly, but I think the interiors are great as they have moved on.

It was just the Modern I was having a pop at. Just made me a bit

In any other guise the F30 looks sublime to me.

Isn't that funny, the 'Modern' one is the only one I would consider.
I have had enough of black interiors, had so many over the last 15 years and now I am in a lighter interior with the E Class I wouldn't want to go back.

But I am getting closer and closer to 40, so maybe that has something to do with it?

Well I've turned 40. Maybe I'm just kidding myself! Clinging onto my boy racer-ness by my finger tips.

I'm just not keen on the new dash, Looks like the sat nav screen was an afterthought.

I will have a look when they appear in the local showroom and make my mind up.

Anyone ordered one yet?

I just noticed that the F30 is up on some of the contract hire sites. I'm sure cheaper deals will be available but today mostly I'd like the 328i Luxury Auto on 3+47 at £403.35

I'm in a 'luxo barge' kinda mood.
