I spent 30 minutes trying to nudge the rods out, pushing from the inside with a needle nose and pushing the outwards tab that keeps flexing with a flathead to stop the flex...Gave up and sprayed PB Blaster to soak it for 10 minutes.

Came back and did the same thing as before, push from inside with needle nose and prevent flex by pushing inwards with a flathead. The rod nearly came flying out for both sides...

USE LUBE FOLKS!!!

Also I could not load the spring back with the cover down and closed, it was too hard. So I lifted the cover open halfway, and stuck a tissue box in between to hold it half open. Loaded the spring EASILY with the cover half open.

finally installed. only spring, no gear. i think it works fine without the gear, feels like the later E90's. need a bit more push to close it. the rubber feet makes black marks, just gotta wipe it off.

the slide part's cushion could be a bit softer, but the trade-off is def worth it. now i can drive leaning into the seat w the right elbow comfortably resting on the... as the name suggests, arm-rest.

Just the gear/cog?

I have a standard lemon dakota armrest and I wouldn't mind it not slamming shut.

Used the part number from the link above to order a spring from my local BMW Bavarian in Northern Ireland.

Would be nice if it gently opened too rather than sprining, but doesn't seem there's a part number for the gear/cog alone.

I can't find a solitary gear/cog on eBay, or any online retailer.

Anyone got one going spare or an idea where to source a GEAR/COG only?

I just did this install and is this armrest suppose to be uneven when extended out and level when pushed back?

Thanks

So, I've read the whole thread and one question still stands.

Is the additional plastic cog really necessary for the retrofit, or is it just for the linear and smooth opening of the armrest, so it wouldn't shoot up like a dart upwards?
Asking 'cause I've got a couple of sets and trying to make it a complete retrofit kit.

Also, are they the same for the e90/91/92s and e93s?

No, the plastic cog isn't necessary. I didn't use it on this retrofit nor the retrofit for my F8X's.

P.S. Yes, all E9X's are the same.

Armrest removal

Great post. I had given up on the removal of this armrest. Now I need to get the cover off the back. Wow. Don't want to break it.

I'm sure there's a way. I don't personally know how to do it though.
