So I went on the track for the first time in my e92 335i. The car is stock except for a JB+ tune set at the 10 o'clock position (30%). Since I am a beginner my first heat was a lead follow and I was not able to push the car. My second heat was a little more interesting. First 4 laps was with an instructor and he got me to open up the throttle a bit more. I was really starting to enjoy myself, however during the 7th lap I got the dreaded half engine light. However, I didn't feel a significant loss of power. Just to be on the safe side, I decided to pull in early. After pulling in, I immediately opened the hood to let the engine cool. I remember seeing oil temps around 290 - 300°F when the light came on. After waiting for about 2 hours, I went back out on the track with oil temps around 180°F, but halfway through the lap the light came back on. Therefore, I decided to call it a day. My best time was 1:42.793. I know I could have gotten faster if the car continued to operate properly. Anyway, later that evening, after the car had about 4 hours to cool as I was getting on the freeway, the light came back on during hard acceleration. This same issue happened again the following day. I don't know what's wrong. I'm planning to remove the tune today to see if that's what caused it. Could this be the dreaded HPFP? I am still under warranty but am concerned that the JB+ has thrown a tuner code. Is there anyone in the antelope valley that can read codes from my car? Will a JB+ at 30% throw a tuner code?

I would recommend you to remove the tune next time you go to a track event. Since you're a beginner, you probably won't benefit the full potential of a tune. And from reading on this forum, the tune could potentially cause overheating issues, and IMO, that would add additional frustration to a beginner while he's trying to learn the line and car control.

My car is bone stock except for tires and brakes. I normally keep my eyes on the oil temp. When it reaches about 280°F (no higher than 290°F), I would do a cool down lap, then continue again.

I see you have a '07 model. I was under the impression that not all the '07's came with the factory oil cooler. Do you know if your car has the oil cooler?


Maybe someone else can chime in here to clarify, but if you get into limp mode due to high oil temps, it might be a good idea to drive around at lower rpms to get some more air flowing over the motor to help cool things down before you park it. Like 50mph in 6th gear. You might have done that that though, and I'm not sure how fast the car can go in limp mode.

Yes, I do have an oil cooler in my car.

I did take a cool down lap after limp mode happened.

If you want to continue to track the 335 with more boost, you may want to look into methanol injection. It significantly reduces intake temps and exhaust gas temps and allows you to run elevated boost levels. With just a tune, dual cone intake and meth, a 335i is at the 400 RWHP level at just 16.5 psi...and the best part is, intake temps and oil temps should be LOWER than running stock lap after lap after lap...
