Hi All-

Considering a 335is purchase. I would really appreciate any and all input from owners who have had or currently own the car. Is the HPFP issue still relevant on the 335is cars? Any failures? Please let me know your experiences with the HPFP and other general feedback.

I don't have an IS, but I have an N54 FBO... I would recommend getting the wheel and tire protection for your car from BMW at time of vehicle purchase.

The RFT tires tend to bubble often or have to be replaced when you get a nail in it. The rims also get bent easily because the RFT tires sidewall is hard (plus any low profile tire + a crappy gov't/recession will give you tons of bad roads potholes/craters)... it will be the best insurance you will ever buy!

I'm not sure if the extended warranty on the HPFP/turbo's carry over to the 2011+ N54's

If you are buying a CPO or used bimmer, make sure you get a PPI done!

We have a '10 msport 335i (not s) Our hpfp went out at about 26k miles, under warranty, no prob. This car however eats light bulbs. ((Also under warranty)) The angel eye day time bulb just went out for the 2nd time in the last 5k miles.

Not a big deal, but if you want to own and maintain one of these, be close to a dealer at least for the warranty and free oil changes. Also, if possible, get the CPO good to 100k.

I passed on the rim and tire warranty. Can't wait for our first tire repair, that is that is when I will change to normal tires. the dealer wanted 2k for that warranty, I see complete rim sets on sale her in the classifieds all the time for well under 1k, for all 4 rims. Don't waste money on this warranty, IMHO

No issues about 5000 miles and feels great with FBO equipped and running DCT.

Being from SoCal, I was thinking just like you when I got my e90... maybe its a regional thing because in Cali the roads are decent (come visit the North Eastern states in the winter months and I will show you a REAL crater about every 10 steps on "maintained major roads"). It's freaking July and the roads are still $#1t here in NJ. Pretty much every year i need to get all 4 rims straightened on my stock 17" w/rft's.

The great thing about the BMW wheel/tire protection is, you can negotiate the price with the F&I guy (not sales guy), basically look up what a set of new tires for your car costs on tire rack (with the same rim size that is on the car). That is the price you want to target for your negotiation on the warranty. The fail safe you have with the BMW wheel/tire warranty is that you can transfer the un-used part of the 5 year/unlimited miles insurance to the next owner OR you can at ANYTIME get a prorated refund for the insurance. So let's say after a month you feel like you don't need it... just cancel it for (59/60)% of your money back! You can't lose!!!

But with a RFT, even if you get a nail in it, they require you to replace the tire (not patch it). So lets say your tires run down to 50% and then you happen to drive thru a construction area and got 4 nails in your tires... guess what??? you just got yourself a new set of tire under warranty! Just remember that construction area at month 59 of the warranty because 2 sets of tires will more than pay for the insurance price. If you have 18"/19" rims, you bet your A$$ you will get a bent rim at some point which will just get you a brand new replacement rim under the warranty. You will be laughing to the bank and can actually enjoy driving your car like it's stolen

Also if you don't buy the insurance at the time of vehicle purchase... you can't go back later and get the insurance so it's better to buy it and then cancel it after you had some time to think about it.

Reliability wise - It's kinda hit or miss with these cars. My car is an 2008 335XI e90 auto sport... mine is Catless FBO + Alpina B3 flash and has been rock F'n solid.

I've had my IBS cable replaced when I first got the CPO, cup holders replaced under warranty, and I had center arm rest replaced under warranty because it had a creak when fully opened. I was forced to have my original HPFP replaced at 25k miles in order to get the free re-programming done, and injector recall done... but other than that I have had ZERO issues (I'm at 66k miles now). Mind you, my original HPFP was perfectly fine with no issues. I'm still on the original car battery (in service date Nov 2007).

I get my oil changed at the dealership every 7500 miles (using the online service coupons which brings my total to $62 OTD). I drain my Oil Catch Can every 20k miles and have a thimble size amount of oil to drain out. I had an Indy walnut blast my intake values and do the spark plugs @ 45k miles. I check my tire pressure every month in the morning and the car hasn't moved over night (keep it rock solid at 33psi Front/36 psi Rear).

Only surprise issue I had was when I had my windows tinted, I learned the hard way that BMW doesn't have a felt liner for the inner weather strips. After I got the first set of vertical lines in the tint... then I learned we need to install mole skin on the weather strips to avoid scratches (http://www.tintprotector.com/bmw/).

21000 miles total & 19500 with JB4 installed. 93/100 fuel mix on custom IS Map 6. FMIC installed at 2000 miles. Conti DW 245X35X19 – 275X30X19 installed at 1200 miles. Battery cable recall, leaking radiator hose replaced, comfort access contact replaced on passenger door.

it varies. my cousin got a cpo with around 60,000KM and within the first year he had a mirror replaced (would move on its own), water pump, oil sensor, coils (twice), and spent about a week in the shop while they replaced some other part, and he did the battery recall recently. but i think hell be good for a while now.

I totally under stood this at purchase, salesman mentioned warranty and when negotiating the loan with the Finance dept, I was shocked at how much they wanted. Got him down to about 2k. Thought for me, it wasn't worth it, still do. However, our car has the 18" rims, if you are running 19's this is more of a worth while investment.

I am a small business owner I carry workers comp, liability, and other various insurances on my company, have for 25years. Never a claim, but it is a cost of doing business. Insurance companies are in business to make money, they wouldn't be in business if they didn't make money, including this tire and rim warranty. It obviously works for you, for me "they would be laughing all the way to the bank." Also, I do not like the run flats, if I get a nail or abrasion, and need tire replacement, I am prepared to chuck them all and get some good rubber. Sorry to hijack!

You should check the threads on the 335i N54 motor. I believe the 335is uses that engine, so whatever issues there are with the regular 335, the 335is will be subject to them. What I know of is:
- HPFP -- it's a PITA, but it's covered for so long I don't know that it matters.
- Turbo waste gate, which if not correctly done, will lead to turbo seal issues that have to be repaired because the seals weren't replaced when the waste gate was fixed. Unfortunately, the seal issue doesn't manifest itself except under very hard acceleration and at high speeds (80 mph+), which the dealer won't encounter when testing its work on the waste gate, so it'll look like it's a separate repair. If you are still under warranty, it won't matter, just another PITA.
- Water pump - this will likely go just after your warranty expires. On the other hand, water pumps aren't immortal anyway, it's just that they should endure longer than they do on these cars. If by some chance you smell radiator coolant at any point, immediately take the car in and mention the smell so they can address it before your warranty expires.

It should be smooth sailing/driving once you have these things addressed.

Well I'd only have the car for two years, do you think I'd even run into the HPFP issues?

OP is asking about the 335is model and not 335i with the same N54...
IMO the problems with the n54 were drastically reduced after the 2010 model year... 2011 models and up have updated software and fixes that plagued the 07-10 335i...

I believe the 335is models are reliable as long as you do a proper inspection...avoiding abused ones...

2011 IS, owned 2 years, FMIC & Oil Cooler, COBB PTF Tune, 12,000 miles. Only service was the battery recall and a slight rattle from the passenger door trim. Just took a 1,500 mile road trip in it to Florida and fell back in love.

2011 DCT 335is with 43k miles....I have probably butchered my car more than anyone else on here. No issues other than the ones I caused. The following are parts that I broke and had replaced under warranty

1. Valve Cover Gasket
2. Drive Shaft
3. Differential
4. Charge Pipe
5. Rotors and Brakes

The Rotors and brakes was going to happen regardless due to my nature of driving. The brakes and rotors are just pure garbage. However if you a conservative drive then you will be fine, if you a driver like a bat out of hell then you will find yourself replacing them often. If you own the car it sbest to upgrade to stainless steel line and Brembo brakes and rotors

I hear you Mark... I also don't have the warranty (but in retrospect, i wish i did get it). I hope all your travels never cause you to need the RFT or to ever feel any vibration in your steering wheel from bends.
