Question about servicing
Hi all,
Sorry if this is a "basic" question but it seems to me that the people on this forum have a lot more knowldge than the sales persons I have just completed 13,500 awesome kays in my 335i. On the dash when I start her up the service icon appears with 14,000km and 01/2010. Does this mean I need to have a service AT 14,000km or in ANOTHER 14,000km i.e. at approx 27,500km? Thanks in advance

'Official' BMW service intervals are way too long and far apart IMHO

It amazes me that people do not understand what they are paying for when they buy a BMW. We are talking about BMW here not those poor excuses for a car like holden. The oil used in these engines (if serviced by a dealer) is co-developed by BMW with Castrol. It is designed to properley lubricate, clean and cool the engine throughout its entire service life (look at your CBS). We are no longer in the age of changing oil every six months because we no longer use those types of oil. Feel free to change your oil before it is due. But while you are at it you should probably replace your 50% worn tyres because they are no longer as effective as providing grip as they were when first worn in. Same goes with the brake pads and discs. You could even change your spark plugs every time you use your vehicle but im guessing you wouldn't, why...because there is absolutely no need and a waste of money. btw... don't take this reply personally, I dont mean to be one of those people that harras users when ever they ask a question but hopefully a few people read this and take notice |

Every time you drive your car and the engine gets hot the molecular properties of the oil deteriorate, it absorbs wear metals and other things like a small % of fuel. Over time it does it's job less effectively. Do a and you will see many of the Yanks have done oil testing from their 335's with results showing significant degradation of the oil over a very short period. Personally I'll change my oil more frequently as I want my car to have as good internals as possible. In any case IMHO any longer than 15,000km or 12 months is too long between oil changes. Likewise I will also have my diff and tranny oils replaced at regular intervals, despite BMW saying they are not necessary. |

For each their own but I never skimp on spending money on maintainance. an oil change at the dealership only costs $150 (inc filter) and I can feel and hear the difference in an engine with fresh oil. I have no doubt that you can go 40,000ks between oil changes but when your car has 110,000klms on it and you develop an engine problem, are BMW or Castrol going to provide you warrenty? I dont think so! |

i received free oil changes at 20,000+ and 40,000+ miles..........
but i do my own oil change every 5k miles........$45 DIY.....BUY, not leased. If my car was leased.......i could careless if BMW made the oil lifetime......like the transmission fluid...... i can almost guaranteed.....if BMW did not offered the free maintenance program..... they would recommend an oil change every 3,000 miles or 3 months......hahaha!

why waste extra money on un-necessary maintenance? just do as the dealer tells you.
plus who gives a shit, hopefully it is bad for the car and 10 years down the track when all the hectics are using them to cruise george st as they can now afford them, they will simply blow up. hell dont even service the bloody thing hahaha |
