Great Review, thanks for posting

If the 335d only had active steering I would have ordered one.

Yes, I agree that this review is very well written, but keep in mind that the subject of this article just might be the best 3 Series currently offered in NA.

I had active steering on my previous 335iC. Had it been available to order on a Canadian production 335d, I would have certainly done so. But not having it is not a major issue for me. The sublime qualities of the 335d are so abundantly evident, I never give a passing thought to AS. The humungous torque of the 335d coupled with the excellent fuel economy far outweigh any missing option.

Thanks everyone Still loving the Diesel. Hitting the Nürburgring this weekend so I should have more to report later.

It's really about what fits your priorities the best. For me 4 doors (Which unlike Europe is the only way you can get a Diesel right now.) is a must. My wife and I both wanted something that got great mileage and was still a blast to drive. If you don't mind 4 doors and giving up some 0-60 in exchange for incredible torque, much better fuel mileage, and an actual oil dipstick then go for it.

Hey Kamando, looking forward for your further review and additional pics!

Can you explain what you mean when you say they took away the various modes on the Harman/Kardon system from the Logic7? Sorry, I don't have Logic7, so I don't really understand. Is it safe to say the quality has been downgraded from the Logic7?

BMWUSA is reporting for 2011 the 3 series now has the Harman Kardon surround sound system that contains:

With vehicle-specific equalizing and powerful 420 Watt amplifier. The 13-speaker system includes four tweeters, four midrange speakers, two bass speakers located under the front seat, one midrange in the center dashboard and 2 midrange speakers in the rear door panels.

Hey Kamando, do you know if the Logic 7 in your previous 3 had this same specs?

Thanks

But that is $850 option, not STD? Am I right?

My previous Logic 7 system had two surround modes: Theater and Concert Hall. I wouldn't say quality is downgraded rather they just took away those two modes and simply gave the driver an on or off choice. (I would venture to say they made Concert Hall the surround mode for the HK system, when you select Logic 7 on, based on how it sounds. Which is fine with me since the previous Theater mode sounded like crap.)

From what I remember it sounds like the same specs as my previous Logic 7 system, which tells me they simple removed the mode choices and put an HK badge on the speakers.

Definitely was hoping the 8 speed would be fitted this year. Probably not enough room in the tunnel until the F30 arrives.
Yeah me too... It was one thing I definitely wanted but ultimately was not enough to keep me from buying the car.

Have you actually driven a 335d ? In DS mode, the transmission shifts very fast. I have my doubts that an 8 speed would be a significant improvement for the diesel engine. Perhaps @ highway cruising speeds, engine rpm would be reduced and therefore increase fuel economy. But the current car can easily achieve 50 mpg (imperial) cruising at 120-130 km/h (70+ mph) !!!

The six speed ZF steptronic is unique to the 335d and the V8 powered 5/7 Series; it is not the same autobox as found in the 335i or 328i.

A very nice car! My upcoming E90 2011 will have those Harman Kardon´s too. What do you think is there any sense at all to made an order without navi pro? It´s so mindless expensive in here, (about $5000) but I don´t want to regret it afterwards.

I regret making the call 'after' my car was in paint to add iDrive. I'd get it, without question. It's useful, and it will help with resale, if you choose to keep the car.

I didn't realize the 2001 335d was available with an M Sport package.

Totally agree with suspension impression

I drove one 2011 335d on a BMW driving event. The set up is a pleasure to drive! Also drove a loaner 2011 328 coupe Xdrive the suspension too was absorbing small imperfections no harsh ride at all.

very nice write up, the 335d is a monster for sure. I'm a bit jealousy at the iDrive though. I should have bought my 335d with one.

Thanks a lot for the info! I'm quite glad to know about the paddle shifters and the comfort... I was a bit afraid of the comfort when I ordered 18" alloys. I'm getting anxious to get mine as October approaches...

By the way, over here the 335d has 2 items from the M sport pack as standard - the sport suspension, seats (sport and electric)... only the driving wheel, anthracite ceiling and the aesthetic kit are optional. Or it was so with the 2010 version...

I looked hard at both a 335d with M sport and a 335d with sport+ paddle shifters. as to funtional performance enhancing differences, the wheels on the M sport "maybe" a little lighter that is the most I and several different CA/SAs could come up with. Other than that its all cosmetic AFAIK. I would be intersted in finding out if the wheels are in fact substantially lighter though as unsprung weight and rotating mass do make a difference.

what surprised me is my 335d M-Sport rides smoother than my 530i that didnt have sport pkg and ran on regular tires instead of run flats. Definately not what i expected, and it handles like its on rails!
