Vehicle hunting on cold start...

Hi

I dropped my e90 325i off this morning at the Stealers to get the Performance Brakes installed and raised with the SA that when starting my car cold it seems to rev high up to 1500 and drop back down to 600 and repeats this. When I put it in gear it lurches forward (or back if in reverse) and is very dangerous. The only way I can stop it is by placing into neutral and giving the engine a rev which seems to resolve the issue. It only happens when the engine is cold.

He mentioned BMW is aware of the issue and it is referred to as "vehicle hunting on cold start" and that there will be a flash update due in July to fix it on the 325 and 330's. I have had him place me on the notification list so when the fix is available I can get the flash update done next month.

Thought you might like to know if you are experiencing the same problem....

Have a good one...

I've had this on my 325 as well, it usually settles after about 10 or so seconds after a dead cold start up. I notice that it gets worse if the car sits (not started/driven) for a few days

I was going to get my spark plugs changed at the next service to see if it solves the issue but thanks for the update. I'll ask the dealer when I'm next in

my 335 cold starts at 1200-1400rpm and then drops to 600rpm as the exhaust flapper opens, normal?

Hi

I am told the flash update to address this problem will be available as of 23 July 2012, for Stealers to download and update for free. I am getting mine done shortly thereafter so hopefully will fix this issue.

May be worth checking with your Stealer if you have a 325/330 and the same problem.

Thanks...

Hi

Had the flash update done yesterday and OMG - I can tell it has been done!!!! I found the acceleration, especially from lights, is a lot snappier and the gear change is smoother. I will have to try the actual cold start in the morning but they kept it overnight and said all worked well.

I am very pleased with the outcome as for some reason the car now has more power and is running a lot smoother...I think this flash update fixed more than just the cold start hunting.

Thanks

The snappier acceleration and smoother gear changes would most likely be as a result of the adaptive settings being reset to default. When my cars are in for a service, I always ask them to reset the adaptive settings. Hope the software upgrade solves the hunting issue (I'm sure it will)

Great to hear a positive outcome with the new flash/update.

I had my spark plugs changed and noticed that it has really helped the cold start hunting/shaking although i still get it from time to time.

I've noticed that when it starts to hunt, if you give the throttle a tiny blip then the idle will immediately settle down and stay constant therefore the car will stop hunting/shaking I will ask BMW about the update as i have my car in for some warranty things this week.

I am having this same problem on my 06 330i, I just replaced the spark plugs this summer so I know it can't be that. I wonder if I need to get the stealership to do the flash update to help fix the issue.

This happened to me after uninstalling Cobb.

I did the throttle body adaptation and it fixed the issue.

Hope this helps
