Dr. Color Chip
Anyone have any experience with the "Dr. Color Chip" product for scratch and chip repair. I've seen it advertised in Bimmer magazine and their website has many testimonials and pictures of results. But any unbiased opinions would be appreciated.

We tried it at a local BMW CCA meeting here. Dr Color was kind enough to send us a kit for us to test (black only). It worked quite well but I cannot vouch for any color other than black.
We tried on an E30 with a lot of truck rash in the front. The chips certainly were filled in but the old faded/oxided paint on the rest of the hood made the repaired area look a little funny. You would probably have better luck on a newer car. You must suffer from terrible rock chips up in your neck of the woods with all of the trucks and gravel on the roads.

Yep, the roads can get pretty nasty up here. I've got a clear bra on the 335 but I've already got a chip just above it on the left fender. They love to "chip" the highways up here to extend there service life. If you don't know what that is - its a OCD detailers nightmare: a thick goop of tar on the surface followed by a layer of rock chips - nasty.

The area I grew up in, they'd spray hot oil on the gravel roads to keep the dust down. I think the guy doing it added a little something extra because that crap would stick to your car for years.

Dr Color Chip runs a detail shop through my local dealership in NJ. When I took delivery of my, there was a 2 inch vertical scratch on my back trunk. His touch up specialist did a spectacular job.
His process is one like no other according to the paint specialist who worked on my car. His paints are designed to only adhere to the scratch/chip and not the smooth surrounding surface. You can actually work the paint while it is wet, blending it only into the area you want filled. Again, I had a professional who had months of training with the product fix ly car. Good luck, Marc |
