BMW Performance Exhaust w/ Dimisa tips sound (PICS)
As you can see from the pictures below, I chose to relocate and replace the standard tips of the BMW Performance Exhaust. I wasn't happy with them sticking too far out and sitting too low IMHO, and looked forward to filling a bit of the gap in the m-tech cutouts with larger tips. They were replaced with 3.5 Dimisa tips.
I'd really like to hear from other BMW PE owners who installed aftermarket tips as I did. Am I going crazy, or did it really change the sound of the exhaust that much? It still sounds great but have you lost a bit of the aggressiveness, or noticed a change at all? I know the size of the Dimisa tips are larger comparatively so it would change the sound, but I'm surprised it may have changed it that much. I'm very curious to hear other members experiences with changing the tips. The girlfriend has no idea what I'm talking about haha, and I'm actually considering going through the hassle/cost of putting the stock PE tips back on. Thanks guys |

So your saying it got quiter?? Im getting my PE installed tomorrow. I was hoping to get 3.5" double walled tips at some point (like stock but larger) but I dont think I want to mess with the sound. Hmm....we'll see.

i was actually thinking of doing the same thing with my AE exhaust. i really wish the tips filled the exhaust cutout a little more. curious if changing the tips really does alter the sound output.

Replacing exhaust tips does enhance exhaust note, any tips that is. The larger the opening, the more throaty the sound. By way of example, think of a saxophone versus a tuba. It's simple sound/audio architecture, really.

IM wondering if the STOCK 335i tips would keep the sound about the same, since they are 3". I like the double walled look much better then the PE tips...PE tips are the only thing I dont really like. We'll see tomorrow though how I feel about them. I like the opening size but wish the tips were thicker.

I'm getting my PE installed right now. I'll post vids of cold starts and a few revs for your comparison.

As far as the volume of the exhaust is concerned I don't think it took away or necessarily added to it either. From my experience it seemingly just changed the tone. With the larger tips the tone is deeper and in some ways seems to have lost a bit of definition, if that makes sense? IMHO the higher revs seem to have lost a bit of that sport-bikish tuned top end sound? So to somewhat answer your question, personally the tips took a bit away from the sound of the exhaust compared to the stock tips, but gave back quite a bit aesthetically speaking. This of course is all subjective to my taste and opinion when it comes to the sound and some may welcome a deeper sounding note. |
