Engine air intake filter

I am thinking of replacing this filter because I find no evidence of it ever being renewed by BMW main agents.I have had the car from new. 6 years and 20k. First, where is it situated? I have looked on youtube and can find nothing informative. Anybody recently carried out this or can point me in the right direction? TIA

What year is your car? Of pre 97 it's under the engine cover on the drivers side. A bit of a pain to change!

If it's an m57 it's under the engine cover on left side, bit of a job.if it's an n57 it's on the left side again but in an air box and pretty easy to spot.

Done the filter change and vacced out the adjacent chamber below. I now notice in the tutorial posted by CraigUK certain bolts and a jubilee clip are circled in red as if they should be removed to complete the job. Have I missed something out?
