How long to get custom CA plates?

Ordered my plates from DMV on the 15th of October, still no plates. I hate waiting...

Anyone with custom CA plates remember how long it takes?

I have no front plate right now, so only 1 plate to turn in when my new plates come. Is this going to be an issue?

Also how do they check your plates on your car once you get the new ones? Do you have to show DMV that you have them mounted properly (front and back plates). Not wanting to buy a tow hook mount if I don't have to.

Took about 6 weeks.

You don't turn in your plates to the DMV. The one plate that you have now is for when you sell the car because the custom plates that you ordered are yours forever and can be used on any car that you buy.

You don't have to show the DMV anything once your plates come. Put only the rear plate on if you want. Just make sure that you put your new registration in your glove box and to ditch the old registration.

DMV will send you new stickers/registration with the new plates your getting (at least they did for me because I paid for my registration and custom plates at the same time unlike you). When you paid for your renewal, what license plate info did you use?

I am also waiting for my custom CA plates to come in and they told me that you have to bring both of your old plates in exchange for your new ones. I should be getting mine soon also.

Doesn't make sense because custom plates are "custom" as in they are YOUR plates. I got my custom plates in the mail and took off my old plates, stored them in safe keeping and installed my custom plates. When I sold my 2007 335i to CarMax they had me put the plates that I bought the car with back on the car because they needed the original plates.
If the DMV has people turn in their plates when receiving their custom plates then that's bogus because say you sell that car but you want to keep your custom plates but you don't have the originals to replace them with? It's not like you can go order that same custom plate because obviously it's already being used by another vehicle...

When I got my custom plates, I had to pick them up at DMV and give them my current plate.

BEFORE you sell your car with environmental plates, if you want to keep the plates, you have to do a DMV transfer. You can transfer to no vehicle, just to keep them reserved for the future.

Just got the notification from DMV today they my plates and they are ready for pickup at my local DMV office. Scheduled an appointment for December 26 (earliest appointment available), although I'm going to try an drop in tomorrow morning early in hopes of being able to get helped without an appointment.
