Extended Warranty on out of warranty 335i
Hey guys
yes I did use the SEARCH button over and over again and there are quite a few alternatives I found, Fidelity AAA Mileone Ford ESP ( dont think they cover if you dont have warranty currently) etc... HOWEVER I have not seen any REAL experiences/testiomnials from 335i owners Also another question is what are my risks here if I were to purchase 2008 335i with 52k on it ( I am guessing turbos is my most concern) and also what AFTERMARKET WARRANTY have you had experiences with, and how did it go? Thanks in advance |

I believe you can still buy a BMW Powertrain warranty for the car, as long as it has less than 80,000 miles. You can buy 1/12, 2/24, 3/36.
The 3/36 runs about the same price as the regular BMW 6/100k Gold Warranty. Note that they still count from original in service date.

That's a tough one, out of warranty will make it $$$ and there are so many it's kinda like pick one and hope it doesn't suck.

Its a minefield out there on 3rd party warranties, I was close to pulling trigger, but decided after much internet research to skip it. The BMW dealers offer the Fidelity, which has a mixed record on claims and reputation.
CarChex is another recommended one thats now underwritten by new insurance. If you look at the AAA and BBB websites you can see what the important stuff is. All these warranties can deny claims based on a host of issues from not having proper service intervals to who knows what. Dealers do discount the Warranties, they have a huge margin, many will budge. Good Luck. There is a ton of post on this of you use the SEARCH and Google. |

Yea know there is a ton of poss, but thanks for the time to break a few down, how is yours holding up ( how many miles you got it with? and now?) I am still a bit undecided whether to but this one with 52k and get warranty with 3rd party or not get warranty at all (take a risk) or wait around until I find one with under 50k and then it will be easier to extend warranty...

I bought my 335i previous 1 owner 13 months ago, with 52K miles on it, Fidelity wanted $2200 for 2 years, 24K miles. I have 65K miles on it now, and at 60K Fidelity wanted $3200 for same.
I did the 60K inspection service, and also changed all fluids, tranny/differential/coolant and brake flush as well. At a BMW track day I had a Engine light near the end, ended up throwing a Low Boost code, had BMW and a Indy ck it out and they both felt is was due to heavy load (high rpm/extreme constant turbo demand) and it has not repeated itself, lesson learned, shift after 5500 rpm as the torque goes away anyway and no use stressing the turbos.....other than that, 1 light bulb. Trouble free... |

P.S. since HPFP is covered until 120k I guess the only other thing that can be a costly repair are the turbos...has any1 ever quoted an indy mechanic to see the cost to replace that. Thanks |

Based on the cost of an extended warranty most of the time you will be better off just putting the 3k in the bank. I bought my 06 330i with 49k from Carmax and got their 6 year 60,000 mile warranty which covers my car till 109k for 2100. My car is now at 101k and I have had $1800 in warranty repairs (rear wheel bearing and air bag seat mat sensor). Their warranty is excellent and covers pretty much everything. Many of the other warranties I have seen are really limited and really expensive so it depends on the quality of the warranty and your risk tolerance.

How are these good prices? A discounted BMW gold will go 7/100 and be maybe 3k or slightly less. That's 3 yr 50k from 4/50, over double the mileage of a 2/24.

However, we're not abnormal, according to the famous Harvard econ professor, we are totally normal in that we're risk averse. Here's how I look at it, 3k is actually very small relative to my monthly expenditures such as mortgage, property tax, utilities, etc. So I could, and did, take nearly 3k out of the bank, buy the BMW gold, and I don't miss the money. From month 49 to 84, within reason, I don't have to worry about major things breaking. How would you actually feel if you had to pay $1800 for your two repairs, when on a Japanese car the same would be in the ballpark of $300 to $500? You didn't have to feel ripped-off because you were covered, even though you'll end up $300 in the red when all is said and done. Sometimes peace of mind is worth it. The BMW warranty is the first time I ever purchased an extended warranty. The second one was a $10 extended warranty on the HFT low profile jack. |

If you want to shell out the cash, find a dealer.
Otherwise, Easycare Totalcare has never let me down. If they offer an upgrade to it, buy that too. It's not the obvious stuff that's going to kill you $$ wise, on this or any car. FWIW it would only take 1 or 2 minor or 1 major repair to pay off the easycare. Example - rear main seal drips on my E55 - not even a leak, not even on the ground, not even through the plastic panels below the car - $1700 job for free because the dealership wanted to do it and they had proof that there was a leak. Example 2 - Airmatic failure [both sides] - $1300 a strut, both sides failed - $500 in labor [at least]. The only thing that could make your situation better would be to find an indy shop starved for work that's got a good relationship with whatever warranty company you choose. BRB, having all my bushings replaced under warranty.

Was wondering how much does Easycare Totalcare cost you, I checked the site and there is not quote generation. 1.If you could tell me how many miles your car had on warranty, 2.What kind of warranty you got and how much it cost you 3.How many miles it has not and what kind of repairs were made 4.How did the claim process go, did you get a rental car hassle free and could you repair it at BMW dealership Much appreciated ! |

As for my E55, $3600 for 3 year/36,000 mile extension, which differed substantially from the dealer. Car was CPO'd and had 42k miles at the time. The dealer wanted $2750 to extend my CPO 1 year/10,000 miles, or $5400 for 2 year/20k miles. The MOST important thing to do is to pick up an extended warranty while you're still under warranty. Overlapping coverage will suck, but the difference between buying the warranty before expiration meant $3600 instead of $7000. The price is going to increase until you buy. And honestly, all of the #'s you get from forum members are going to differ based on the retailer of the warranty. I'm sure you can find someone locally to cut you a deal.

This is the best advice in the thread, too. The dealers will bargain with you, to get your business, not in the margin on the warranty, but by the very virtue that you're bringing them future warranty work which THEY get paid for. It's a win-win for them.

Quoted 2700 for 2 year 24k exclusion type bumper to bumper warranty for a non CPO'd 52k 335i coupe. They use mileone and from the small amount of research I've done so far they seem to be ok, no real horror stories. One of the things that tischer said that peaked my interest is that claims were handled by the SA, so less chance of claims being denied like so many aftermarket warranties are known for. If I end up going for a non warrantied or non cpo'd car I think that's the route I will take. Last edited by Foxcolt; 05-27-2011 at 03:09 PM.. |

you should look into AAA diamond / platinum or the Mercury Insurance Extended Warranty. Both are very good and offer exclusionary packages, which is what you should be getting anyways

Maybe I'm more likely to end up actually losing a little cash on the warranty (especially from a time value of money perspective), but after that experience, I'm very glad to buy the peace of mind of avoiding any future $4000 catastrophic AC failures. |

Wachovia offers an extended warranty that I grabbed for $3,185 that I grabbed for the 335 I grabbed last weekend. It covers 5-years and 60K miles.
On my previous 328i, I got a pretty good deal through Costco on their extended warranty discount. |
