Thats about right I'd say, but out on the motorway it will be considerably better.

Mine has been much improved since I replaced both the thermostats, best £60 or so I ever spent.

I used to get 30mpg average in my 59 plate Civic Type R and I'm driving with an even lighter foot if anything!

Tyre pressures and engine oil checked. The only thing was that the engine oil was topped up over the max line on the dipstick. I only picked the car up a couple of weeks ago through BMW AUC. Worth taking into my local dealership to check out?
I also have a 325D auto 59 plate and I average about 30/31 too. So i think its perfectly normal.

I will soon be collecting my 330i (272 bhp model) and the obc is saying 28.2 which I will be happy with. I was only getting low 20's out of my e46 330d as my commute was only very short.

26mpg from my E92 330D. Thermostats now done, and no difference.

Still finding it difficult to persuade the dealership there may be something wrong!

I think if your getting less than a 330i that's evidence enough surely?

There responses so far have all been "Well it is a 3 litre Sir".

Amusingly, the same 30 mile commute but left in DS now achieves 28mpg in both directions

You're doing well!! If I'm on a long motorway run and just cruising I can get around 34mpg but for general driving I get around 25mpg.

On my E92 335D, sticking it on cruise @ 70mph i get 47-49mpg.

But driving it in town with a lot of stop start and pedal to the metal, it can go as low as 20mpg!

I too will be replacing one of the stats soon.

I do find some of these stats quite interesting, my previous experience has been the following:

1999 E46 318i Saloon Manual - 32MPG average
2002 E46 325i Coupe Auto - 28.9 average (in the 40's for 70 MPH cruise however)

I also borrowed my brothers 2009 E90 325d for a few weeks, which used to return an average of 45 mpg without really trying.

Tomorrow I am about to take delivery of a 330d which has been at BMW HQ in a display case for 12 months and only used to every now and then for tick over, when I viewed it the computer said 7 mpg!

There is quite alot of info all cars available on fuelly.com

there is definitely something wrong there. Ive had 3 330ds a 325d a 330i and an m3 and all the 3l diesel engine e46/e90 got me 35-40mpg with a very low average speed of 22mph. In 100k i have never got less than 32mpg out of the 330d.
325d is the same, which begs the question why both buying one new over a 330d!

I've had my 2012 320d sport plus coupe for seven months, and was getting itchy feet already and looking into a 335d or m3.

However after reading this post, i'm just going to get a tuning box fitted and keep the 320d!

52mpg over 10k miles. 90% motorway commute.

E92 320i Coupe, over the last 3,000 miles I've averaged 31.5MPG according to Fuelly.

Mixture of town (traffic stop start) and motorway driving.

I'm not happy with my 23.1mpg from my 330i. It's mostly round town stop/start which is the worst type of driving! Was obviously kidding myself thinking I could get the 28mpg the book says!
