Working around paint chips?

I've got a few paint chips on my hood, larger than normal road rash, but not so large you'd notice them if I didn't point them out.

Is there any risk of making these worse when polishing the car? Do I need to take care to avoid that area altogether?

The front bumper always drives me crazy when I polish. It invariably looks worse than when I started, all the pits are accentuated after polishing. But then again, I'm just a weekend warrior

I never see pits in any of your pics Eric. I guess you're just too smart to snap those?
