Mazel Tov.
I gave up in September. I won't lie, it hasn't been easy. I actually enjoyed smoking, so giving up was tough. But I feel much healthier. And I don't stink. And I've done this whist avoiding being a sanctimonious prick- the trap that many ex-smokers fall into.
Stick with it dude.

Not sure how OP managed it, but I used the Allen Carr book (which has a very high success rate apparently)

I've tried all sorts but never books. How does that work? Is it a sort of motivational tool?

Well done. I gave up about 12 years ago. My girlfriend at the time chucked it and is I was to tight to buy my own I stopped as well.

Started up again about 4 years later when i met my now wife as she was a smoker. Only this time it was mainly cigarettes of the herbal variety . About 6 months ago I just woke up one morning and decided to not bother anymore, I haven't smoked since.

I'm fortunate that I seem to be one of those people that just doesn't have an addictive personality. I've watched my wife try to give up and she finds it really difficult, it's a nightmare living with her.

Well done all, i can appreciate it's probably very hard to do. My brother is going through it now, not quite there yet.

And yes you do all stink so an even better reason to quit.

I gave up when they were £5.50 a pack, I think they are nearly £8 now!

All the scroungers I see still smoke though!

I actually used an audio book - listened to it in the car.
The book is part motivational, part education, part de-programming.
Its odd, because the book bangs on about a 'technique' to quit smoking but there isn't actually one - but by the end of it you've kind of been 'un-brainwashed' from wanting to smoke - it talks a lot about habit and addiction and breaking the cycle.

Its a good listen/read and the success stats are very impressive. I'd definitely recommend it.

I'm definitely going to try that, sounds promising. It's something different to what i have tried before.

My understanding was that each time you light-up someone twats you in the face with the book

Good luck to all those trying to give up, it is tough, but smokers really do stink . I met a guy for lunch last week, had nipped out for a smoke before lunch, during lunch, and again after lunch. Each time he returned to the table the smell was horrible and put me right off my food. When I know him a bit better I'll tell him also!!!

Haven't turned to violence yet but it's only a matter of time. I'm a little bit shall we say, tense.

Is there a particular reason why you are giving up?

Funny how you can't type *** but you can type pretty much anything else.

I actually intended to make the switch from real ciggies to those electronic things with a view to cutting down and stopping. So I ordered the fake ones with some refills and I started those on the 4th. Then that coincided with me getting a stinking cold and the fake **** give you a shocking sore throat. Something to do with the water vapour drying you out.

Anyway, as it turns out it's nothing like having a ciggie other than the nicotine hit. And you still hide yourself away because you feel an arse doing it. The only good thing was I could 'smoke' in the car with my windows shut! So early yesterday evening I thought 'bollocks to this' and I have had no nicotine since. No cigarettes for 8 days and no nicotine since yesterday.

And I have to say that is absolutely epic and anyone who's never smoked will have no idea how epic that is. You can not compare it to anything in your life unless you've been addicted to some sort of drug. I am addicted to nicotine but I haven't had any for nearly 24 hours. Two hours would usually be about my upper limit.

I've tried a few times before but usually I'm turning violent by mid-morning. This time I feel sort of normal. And I'm strangely confident.

How about £2912 a year and wanting to see my kids grow up? I'm an old dad (44) with young kids (nearly 5, nearly 2, another on the way). I don't want to put them through me dying of lung cancer. After smoking for 25+ years I've probably left it too late but hopefully not.

Good luck

About a pack a day. Some days a little over, some days a little under. Never had a cough or anything though.

Stay in the pink with ciggies and drink!

Now, drink. There's the next vice to tackle...

3k a year is kind of irrelevant. As I am sure you spend lots of money on other things anyway. Car, house, Holiday, etc. So understandable if you are broke but I doubt that.

The kids is a good argument. and defo carries emotional weight. But I dunno, one of my customers is a retired doctor. The guys is 70 something and smokes but is still fit as a fiddle. Same for a relative of mine who is also elderly and a smoker.

The stink is a good argument definately cant really argue against that one.

I am not trying to discourage you mate. Far from it, I am just trying to rationalise it from my perspective. We are looking to have kids soon hopefully in the next 2 years. I have this notion that I would like to quit when my first born arrives.

I am not a heavy smoker at all. Usually 1 a day on the way home and sometimes one on the way to work.

If it helps, my friend was a heavy smoker he used to do twenty a day. and then went onto rolllies and end up smoking more. One day last year he came down with a really bad cough type fever. Where he called me and said he felt like he was going to die so thats it no more smoking. He bought an Ecig. and used it for about 3 months. and then stopped completely he hasn't touched a cigg since.

So best of luck to you mate.
