Turbo Tax

Has anyone used this?

I usually go to my preparer but I tried Turbo Tax without actually submitting anything and it seemed legit.

They show you your audit risk at the end and state that they use over 350 calculators to determine the deductions, contributions, etc...

Been using it for 4 years. They import my data from last year, they import my trading account data (worth it for this feature only so I don't have any issues figuring out dividend types, etc), and I just plug in my other stuff. Super easy, I get it done in an hour or two.

I always use the H&R Block at home online filing thing. They let you do it for free if you're active duty military so that's why I choose them. I've been doing it for almost 5 years now and no issues at all, no audits or anything.

we've been using TT for years with no problems until last year when we owed a substantial amount to the IRS.

I think it was because my wife claimed the same deductions as I had (I didn't know till it was too late) but I can't be sure cause I'm not an accountant dude.

So this year I am going to have a friend accountant do our taxes and have him review last years return. If he comes up with the same figures we will probably go back to TT.

Yea I noticed the option to import data. That's a very nice feature!

I actually plan on doing the same thing as you, well similar. If the figures from my CPA are pretty close to TT, I'll try out TT instead for future ease of use.

I have been using Turbo Tax for 10 yrs and I have some pretty complicated returns some years and TT has never screwed me. I know people who use tax break and H&R software and had issue especially with stocks. It seem like many companies today are offering online tax return for free, you have to ask, how can they do it for free and how are they making money, probably selling your information. Plus you just put your SS and other important tax information online where those smart hackers could probably get access to it.

I tell people do not post your personal information especially tax information online. Why, when real thieve break into your home and steal your stuff one thing they try and find is old tax returns, then sell that information to identity thieves, since everything they need is contain in your tax return.

Be smart and protect your information

I work for Intuit, the maker of TT. For those that have not filed yet, you can get a 20% discount on TT for friends and family. Enjoy

I have used it in the past, and it was always close enough to what my accountant would get that there was no point to pay for the accountant to prepare them for me. Once I started my business, and taxes flow through to me, it has become easier to just let my accountant deal with everything again. TT worked great when I was using it though, and should my situation ever change, I would happily go back.
