3 stage manifold + intake silencer removed (no tune yet)

hey everyone

I just removed the silencer off the intake piping and just wanted to share some feedback. (ill post up pictures as soon as I can)

Personally, sound difference isn't as dramatic as its hyped up to be in the DIY forums. But there is a difference in engine sound over stock exhaust sound after 4500rpm. which personally i like (who doesn't like the sound of the I6 =P)

what I am most surprised about is that before i removed the silencer, when accelerating, once i hit 4500 i used to feel that the car was a bit more torque-y after i hit that mark (sorta like honda's vtec) and i felt that ever since i put the 3 stage manifold in. it would make me sink a little deeper into my seat when im accelerating around that area of that area of the power band.

Now that I removed the silencer, that jump in torque at 4500 is no longer there and I feel a much smoother pull throughout the power band. I'm not saying that the silencer removal added hp or anything, but the car feels much smoother when accelerating to redline from 3000 to 7000 on a 4th gear pull. the car is running well and I haven't felt like it has been sluggish (phew, guess that means I sealed that hole well haha)

I just thought that was surprising and wanted to share. Has anyone tinkered w/ their silencer and have any input on their drive? love to hear about other people's experience.

In all honesty, sound wise, the difference is in cold starts before the car is warmed up; other than that its pretty nice at the higher revs (of course PE or possibly another intake system like PI or gruppe M will give you a nicer sound)

its just add a nicer lower tone to the engine.

but the biggest surprise is still the pull. It still pulls the same way for me; a nice smooth pool through the power band (but if you have the 3 stage manifold, you can still feel it kick in slightly, but not as abrupt as before) I really wonder what the difference would feel like after the AA stage 2 tune

haha Andrew, Im just wondering what are my options as to going with AA's tunes. I know I can go with your stage 2 tune since i have the manifold swap in my 325i, but I heard once somewhere (don't remember where so maybe its just my imagination haha) that there is possible and off-road tune that I can get from AA for that extra 'hmph'?

Also, I dunno if you checked this page out before from turner motorsports:
http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-13...-e9x-325i.aspx

they seem to have a more custom tune (they too have a stage 2 tune) that takes headers, intake, and exhaust into consideration. Not like its a matter to me (i'm dead stock haha) but have you heard anything about their work with ECUs and how AA's stage to compares? I just want some insight; i know ill be going with AA since jlevi is pretty close to me at the moment but just want to learn more about whats out there aftermarket-wise.

I have a 07 328i with Injen intake, magnaflow exhaust and a AA tune. If you saying that removing your silencer gives you smoother pulls, its probably from your ECU adjusting to the amount of air intake the engine is getting. If you think that gives you a wider range of power on ur car wait til you get a AA tune. My 328i is no rocket but its truly a fun car with a lil bit of extra "hmhp". lol
