Should BT cut off my phone for 20 seconds at engine startup while already on a call?

I've noticed that if I'm walking back to my car on a call (Verizon RAZR V3c with .02 firmware) that the phone connects to Bluetooth in the e90 as soon as I press the start/stop button - but there is a 20 second delay before I can hear anyone over the car's speakers!

During those 20 seconds, my phone is also cut off since it believes it is connected to the car via BT. So, my caller and I have to wait for 20 seconds. It's kind of embarassing explaining to someone that I have to put them on hold for 20 seconds.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Also, I've noticed that if I want to have a private conversation and use the headset to disconnect BT from the car, it will disconnect but automatically reconnect about 30 seconds later, making it impossible to have a private call!

BT

Your call should continue whether the start or stop the car.

There is a slight delay as BT pairs with your car.If you look at your phone during this process, you'll see that it's not a seamless transition plus you should see a msg that says BMW(number)as it pairs.

A slight delay is OK, but 20+ seconds is way too long...

That is probably more likely a problem with your phone. How does it work with a regular bluetooth headset? For my bluetooth headset, it takes a while for the headset to pair, but during the pairing process, the handset still works. Is it the same with the in-car bluetooth?

Yeah I have the same delay (about 10-20 seconds, SLVR) and it's really annoying. Haven't tried getting out of the car while on a call yet...

Is the car stereo muted when this happens, or is the car behaving like there's no call? The BMW kit (like most integrated kits) doesn't route audio from the phone unless the phone tells the kit it's in a call. This is so you don't hear all your key feedback and whatnot through the call speakers.

I've noticed some phones have issues with sending the call-start indication to an HFP device (headset or carkit) when the connection is made when the call's already in progress.

Yeah,..My delay is about 1-2 seconds when entering the car. Exiting the car with a BT phone call is weird. It doesn't seem to want to drop the BT connection and give it back to me on the phone. This happens even AFTER I locked the doors. Anyone experience this?

Mine drops almost immediately on locking the doors iirc, but I usually stay in the car and wrap up my call instead of switching back to the handset.

I've experienced this as well but have learnt to deal with it better.

First and foremost, a way around the delay to continue talking is once the "silence/delay" happens check your phone menu... I have an LG VX6300 (Verizon) and it has an option (accessible from a side menu I have to bring up) to "Use Phone." Rather than end my conversation I simply start my car and when the silence happens (I see a BT symbol on my phone, but the Nav screen doesn't show the phone icon yet) I select "Use Phone" on my phone. When I do this, the radio will come on (if it wasn't muted) and I talk through my headset.

Once the phone icon appears on my Nav screen I figure the BMW BT system is ready to function properly. At this point, through my phone menu, I can select "Use Bluetooth" and this switches me back to the car... IIRC even if the radio was muted, this act of switching will automatically unmute and I'll be able to hear the other person immediately... if not I make sure the mute icon is there and if it is I hit the radio knob to unmute the conversation and all is well.

So in short, things to do or keep an eye out for:
  1. Check if your phone provides a method for you to switch between phone/BT so you can do what I do.
  2. Keep an eye on the phone icon on Nav screen - when it appears it's probably safe to switch over to the car's BT or begin your phone call if you were waiting and just got in the car.
  3. If you switch to BT and still hear nothing, check for the radio mute symbol and press the knob to unmute.

This is normal and is probably a convenience feature. I figure BMW didn't want you to fumble for your phone and lose the conversation once you realize the phone shut off once you shutdown your car. In my experience it'll drop the BT connection if you keep walking away from the car. I'm not sure what the exact distance is, maybe ~10 meters but I've actually walked away and watched my Nav shutdown finally lol

While the car maintains the connection you'll notice the Nav screen stays lit, even after you lock the doors and walk away. In order to get it to shutdown on the spot you'll have to either (1) switch to the phone, or (2) walk away till the BT unpairs.

Do you mean it drops the pairing, or do you just shutdown and lock your door mid-conversation then grab your phone w/o physically switching it over to the phone?

Just curious

*edit: Wow I just realized this is a year old post, back from the grave!

On a related note, I actually mentioned this delay issue on a service visit and they pretty much handed me a standard canned response and said "oh your phone isn't on our approved list, we suggest you switch to one of those" to cover themselves. They asked if I could leave my phone for them to test the issue - umm yea, no chance of that. Oh well.

These message boards get a bit cumbersome to read when people miss post stuff and argue.

This is a pretty reasonable response, actually. The "approved" list is phones they've tested and guarantee to work. Just because a phone's passed Bluetooth logo testing doesn't mean all the corner cases behave the way the carkit is expecting them to -- *especially* where phonebook is involved, since that functionality isn't part of Bluetooth support per se.

This call state tracking stuff is indeed part of the HFP spec, but apparently it's not tested (or hasn't always been tested) as part of certification.

I have the same problem with my 06 330i. If me or my wife are on a call when we get in the car, it takes about 45 secs to hear the other person talking on the car's system. You actually can't hear anything and the other person can't hear you either but the phone says its connected to the car and the car says its connected to the phone. it will also freeze the iDrive for about 12 secs and you can't adjust anything, not even the volume, so if your trying to turn down the radio that just came on 10 secs after you started the car, the idrive wont respond, even to mute. Its been a pain in the ass trying to take it to the dealer for them to fix it.
Also in the morning, when we start up the car, even if your not connected on a phone call, once the BT phone connects to the car it will freeze the idrive again for 15 secs while it connects. Stupid stupid slow idrive. THe newer cars never do this with our phones!!! And it has been on all 3 of our BMW approved phones. V551, Razr and my iPhone!!

When you say newer cars, do you mean newer BMWs or different brands? Interesting... I guess this is what I expected, even for some approved phones.

I thank the other poster above ^^^ to responding to my post and I agree it is a reasonable response but the approved list is pretty short - which is understandable, they can't possibly spend time checking every single phone out there expect what is perceived to be popular I suppose.
