Dump Runflats..Now What??

I have an 330 xi on order w/ performance/sport and 162 wheels, due in two weeks. I am dumping the run flats due to weight and need to replace them. I've done the searches, read A-LOT of reviews and all the reports that you read on a particular tire indicate that it's the best. I want a high performance tire, with excelent dry and wet traction, and one that is quiet. The tires that I've researched are Dunlop Direzza DZ 101, Goodyear F1 GS D3, Michelin PS2, Fuzion ZRi,Pirelli P Zero Nero, Toyo T1R & T1S. Price is not a consideration-weight and performance are.

Any info would be appreciated.

I have the Pzero Nero M+S tires on, and I love them. I dassume that the non-M+S would be even better, but I had to have an all season performance tire...

Suggestion: try the ContiExtreameContacts. Its all season, AA traction rated, W or Y speed rated, 5 ply tread and quite reasonably priced. Got mine from Discount Tire. Cool tread pattern- "shark fin inspired " tread!

If you don't mind me asking, why are you looking for performance after ordering the XI? I am awaiting delivery on a 330xi as well, but I went into it knowing I was trading off performance for all wheel drive (read: winter drivability).

I also ordered the 330xi with the 162 wheels, but am looking for a viable winter wheel/tire combo as these will now be my summer set.

Back to your question though - Right now I'm driving an E46 328i. My winter setup is the stock 17" wheels with a good all season tire. For summer I run 18" SSR GT3 rims with Potenza S03 performance tires & the car sticks to the road like glue. I would HIGHLY recommend the S03's.

If you're interested in the GT3/S03 combo, I'll be selling them. The tires have about 7k miles on them. If not, a good source of info is gary@tirerack.com. He knows his stuff.

I'm a fan of Toyo's. The T1S's have been replaced by the T1R's. I use those on my S2000 and they stick. Pretty quiet too.

I live in Los Angeles so I don't get to try out the S in the rain much.

Eleven24........The run flats simply weigh too much. The weight of the wheels and tires exceeds 60 lbs. @ each wheel and that's unsprung weight! I also have a MINI Cooper S and purchased the "Lite" Wheels and run flats, which came with the Lites. Bull......Those wheels on the MINI weighed in at 72lbs. each!!! I dumped them, purchased two sets of Kosei racing wheels with Yoko AV ES 100's and weigh in at 36 lbs. for each wheel! You cannot imagine the difference in the handling of the car and the steering responsivness. I purchased the XI for the all wheel driviability...however, it does not mean that I will change my driving habits because of that. If I can make the car lighter by removing the unsprung weight, improve the handling...then so be it. However, if this is NOT a good idea, then I would also like to hear that as well. Thanks!

I vote PS2s if money is no object, the dry/wet performance is just ahead of all the rest of the options and they are the lightest of the bunch by (followed closely by toyos). The GSd3s are notable for being quiet but HEAVY.

Here are the weights for the tires that you are considering:
Bridgestone RE050 RFTS 25# F 26#R 102# total
Dunlap Direza ???
Goodyear F1 GS 24#F 26#R 100# total
Michelin PS2 21#F 24#R 90# total
Pirelli P zero nero 22#F 24#R 92# total
Toyo ???

So if you are looking to shave weight as top priority then go for the Michelins.

I too have been looking to shave weight. Best bet I have found is to go with the PS2 (rated better than the Goodyears on Tire Rack) and order some BBS RGRs

The 162 wheel weight as best I can decipher is roughly 25 lbs (24.7 front and 26.2 back) each or 100# total. The same size RGRs is 19# each or 76# total.

So the RGR PS2 combo would save you 36# total!!! The savings is more if my weight estimate on the wheels is wrong (got them from the wheel weight post on e90post). Cost $3776 plus shipping.

Let me know if you find a lighter wheel that you think looks nice.

I guess the next step would be to figure out what you're going to do when you get a flat. Mobility System or a spare in the trunk?

mdemange....Thanks!! I really like the 162 wheels and I know that I'm giving up a lot of weight here. If I didn't like the 162's so much, I could find wheels in the 19lb. range, (BBS). The PS2's are the way to go. I would carry a compressor and a can of fix-a-flat to get me through. So with a BBS set up and the PS2's you would have ~40lb.s on the corners as compared to 50lb. with the REO50 RFTs!

It does make a difference.

I saw on tirerack that there is only 1lb difference between the ps2 and the gsd3, but that is for 265/30/19.

I think my new rims will weigh under or around 20lbs each, so I'm looking forward to better handling.
