Tire Recommendations

So I am finally making the switch from run flats to regular non run flat tires. I came across this article below and was narrowed in down to these four (mainly based off price). Anybody have any experiences with any of the nine from car and driver?

I live in philly and have to deal with horrible pot holes regularly. So I want tires that can handle that type of abuse. Thanks in advance!

Brand/Model, Price, Treadwear, Speed
Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole, $668, 280, y
Hankook Ventus R-S3, $734, 200, w
Continental ExtremeContact DW, $616, 340, y
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2, $660 ($50 mailin), 300, y

thats from 2012, there are more tires that came out and are decent. S04 is a great tire. if price isnt an issue go with PSS. you can also look into V12 Evo K120, NT05, RE760.. tons!

My personal recommendations by category, also... use TireRack for ratings and such, Car and Driver is usually not as up to date.

Track/DOT Rated R-Compound:
1. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2
2. Pirelli Trofeo R
3. Pirelli PZero Corsa System (Not R-Compound but I think it fits in best here)
4. Toyo Proxes R888

Max Performance Summer Tire:
1. Michelin Pilot Super Sport
2. Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta (Interesting Price v. Performance here, I'd check this out of the PSS is too much dough)
3. Hankook Ventus V12 Evo (Really hard sidewalls, might not be the best for Philly)

Max Performance All-Season Tire:
1. Michelin Pilot A/S 3
2. Continental ExtremeContact DWS

I have the Hankook Ventus and love them so far. Quiet, good in the rain & performed very well in the snow this past winter.

I have Blizzaks for the winter. So I would like to get nice summer tires. Price matters to me so spending $600 is much more appealing than $1000 for a set of summer tires.

I would recommend the Continental DW or S04.

I went to an A/S tire after I used up a set of Conti DW's... I actually love them. A little more flex in turns, but very sticky and they work in the snow up here in Colorado.

I had the Eagle's on my car recently and their performance was excellent. I would have purchased them again but wanted to get an all season this time.

I like the Hankooks also. However, I would not recommend for the snow.

Need more information in order to help you make a good decision. What kind of driving are you doing? Do you need them to perform in near freezing weather and snow? What is most important to you...comfort or handling or all weather performance?

There are a wide variety of different type of tires that have been recommended on this thread. Some are not really in the same class, so do your research to ensure you are cross shopping similar tires.

I've had the following tires on my 335; Bridgestone RE050, Hankook Ventus V12, and two sets of Pilot Super Sports. By far the best of those three is the PSS. I have the Continental DWs on my S2000. They are fine for a daily driver, if comfort and all weather performance is a high priority (actually the DWS is the "all-weather" variant). As far as sheer performance they are not nearly as good as the PSS. In the past i've had various Toyo and Goodyear tires, I've never been a fan of any of the Toyo or Goodyear products.

Wife has the Pzeros on her X1, they are way overpriced considering how mediocre they perform in independent tests. They seem ok performance-wise, but just not worth the money.

The Pilot Super Sport on the other hand is well worth the money! They have great tread wear (mine lasted almost 30k miles, including several track days), and perform amazingly right up to the point where they are dead. Under normal driving you should get 35k+ miles out of them. Remember, the performance of your BMW is completely at the Mercy of those four contact patches with the road. Hope that helps a little.

+1. The Conti DW is a distant second from my experience.

Go with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires if you want street tires that have great grip in dry weather and can also handle wet conditions.

I have been using the potenza S-04 for the 7 months (I drive a lot 30k per year so I have some good miles on them) I highly recommend them, I actually rate them as highly as the Michelin PS-2 which I never thought I would say about any tire. I can't say how they hold up to pot holes because here in AZ they are very rare as we have very well maintained roads with the exception of Tucson which is an area I don't travel in much. Since i drive a lot and have had my car for nearly 5 years I have tried a lot of tires, the S-04 is better than the continental DW, Hankooks some suggest and the Vredestiens.

I personally went with ExtremeContact DWS due to Ohio weather. They were $680 or so. I love them. We've got some pretty bad potholes here as well, and the DWS's handle them very well. The ride is dramatically improved, and the road noise is almost entirely absent save for rough or gritty roads.

Plus, they're more than capable of handling the snow here. Ice is another story, but I wouldn't be caught driving on glare ice. Way too risky for how much I love my car.

The difference in dry handling vs my RE050A's was noticeable, but I acclimated to the new feel within a week. Now they feel like my old tires, but that's obviously a mental thing. I'm not much of a spirited driver, so the dry handling difference between the RE050A's and DWS's is negligible; but what I do gain is dramatically improved winter traction and fantastic wet traction. That's really my biggest concern.
