Blacked Out Headlights

Seen this on a few American E90/92's and thought I'd give it a go,
1. Remove bumper
2. Remove headlights
3. Headlights into the kitchen oven (200'c for about 10min)
4. Split headlight and dismantle internals
5. Rub down all chrome parts (except reflectors) with 400 grit
6. Prime, paint matt black, tint spray on indicator lens
7. Rebuild
8. Back into oven for 5mins just to soften adhesive and quickly press it all back together.
9. Refit headlights
10. Refit bumper
11. Stand back and admre with a cold beer.

I wonder if they will leak...

Is that why you took the washer jets out?

No they don't seem to leak, soaked them a bit afterwards with hose, no condensation build up or fog, been raining last night and nothing in them this morning so seemed to have resealed ok, I made sure both parts had plenty adhesive in the respective grooves, softened it up in oven then quickly wearing oven gloves pushed together and held till cooled down and adhesive was hardening again.

They look good! - did exactly the same on my Scooby track car - the bug-eye lights are too chrome looking for me, so softened up the adhesive with a hot air gun and seperated in the same way.

Great mod

Your a brave man Davie, and it's a mod I've considered, but not by me!

OSS do what you have done with differing options, but you have to remove your headlights, send them to the States and wait for their return.

Apart from the loss of use of your car for 3/4 weeks the cost with shipping was astronomical, so I ruled it out.

Well done,it looks great

Cheers guys, just makes the front end look so much more aggressive, can't wait now for the matt black csl's, dropped on a set of H&R springs, some sort of custom back box(not to loud), and window tints.

Washer jet popped out itself back in December, pipes froze up then tried to spray window and the jet came right out, other side was hanging out so removed for safe keeping.

Cheers, I've seen the OSS ones with their amazing AE and LED Indicators, and thought I'm for some of that. Some amazing blacked out M3 headlights on the M3 section of Forum.

I don't like the chrome so getting rid, Headlights and grills.

I've split headlights in the past on my R33 Skyline which were cloudy and dull so removed to try and fix, didn't work, the clear plastic was discoloured with the heat or something, had to replace.

I'll agree with the comment that when I read the title I thought it was going to look crap.......
However, it doesn't and I like it.
A lot.

Also, however, I would never have the nuts to put my headlights in the oven.
I can just see the scene.

"Sorry darling, we can't use the oven for a while. Or my car either"

"Why's that sweetheart..?"

"My headlights are melted to bottom of the oven in one huge gelatinous mass"

"Oh, that's fine, don't worry about it. WAIT. WTF DID YOU DO!!!"

HAHA Westy

Yeah the wife was a bit,
U are going to do what darling.
Yeah it's just like cooking a pizza, 200'C for 10mins.

Only bit that worried me was the wiring and if the plastic touched the side and marked it so was careful that it didn't touch. Removed them from oven a few times during the 10mins and tried to prise apart with a butter knife so wasn't really in for full 10 mins constant.

Done this to my old MR2 Roadster. I cooked my headlights in my oven, actually it was the first "meal" i cooked in my brand new oven in my new apartment about 6 years ago...

Everybody was laughing with me when i told them what i was going to do, then when they saw the results they just shut their mouths

Top mod bud and looks great! Very interesting too as I thought E9x lights were completely "sealed" and that you couldn't do anything to open them

200 celcius ? thats nuts , 100 will do plenty.

I had mine in for 5 minutes at 200 celcius and I took it out cause it was smoking

But I pulled of the lens , no problem.

When putting together again , I put 150 or 100 , dont remember for little over 5 minutes.

Then when I took out plastic was soft on top lid. The plastic tab on bottom had melted a bit together with its mating tab. No drama , but I personally would think 100 celcius is plenty.

I took mine completely apart and cleaned and put together.

Maybe I will do the paint mod later. For now headlights was with water inside , adaptive controller crapped out and xenon module and the bulb

My suspect for this is connector into the headlight , missing something I think .
