Is the tyre switch worth it?

Yes I'll apologise in advance - This is another 'run flat or not' thread.

I adore my 335i. It checks every box for me except one, and that is ride comfort...may be I'm just getting old.

A while ago I was 100% certain to be buying a mobility kit and non run flat premium tyres all round, however recently there have been opposing views - e.g. that it doesn't really make all that much difference and hence the doubts crept in.

I know that you won't get S Class comfort with non run flats and that there can still be some crashing over pot holes. But I'm interested to know whether those who swithed over still consider it a worthwhile switchover for the money is costs?

Cheers.

Yes it is. What tires does your car have?
If the cost is a concern wait until the stock RFt's are done then replace them. Then you will be saving money because the non-RFT's are cheeper.

I have changed to non RFT's and the ride comfort is a bit better than the Bridge stone RFT's I took off.

The reasons I changed to Non RFT's

The RFT's have a thicker sidewall and are a bit 'crashier' than the ordinary tyres and because of this they transmit the bump through the tyre rather than absorb it. This helps towards cracking and damage to my wheels as I have the 19" wheels that are a bit prone to damage.

The principle of the RFT's is good if it works properly however if your tyres are well worn it does not work and the tyre comes off the rim and damage to the rim occurs.

If you can remove the offending nail/screw from a RFT then you can plug or fill the tyre with Tyreweld, inflate it and drive to a garage.

At best they might repair it but usually they refuse and you have to buy a new tyre IF they have one in stock.

So you have a RFT with 15K miles left on it and a puncture makes it only fit for the bin.

The case for ordinary tyres.

You get a puncture, fix it either with a plug, Tyreweld and a compressor (for good measure) and take it to the tyre place and they put a permanent plug in and off you go £15 lighter rather than £270 lighter.

I would say that the ride is better on 18" and only slightly better on 19"

I recently changed my [flamesuit on] E60 [flamesuit off] tyres from RFT's to non run flats. Best move I could have made. Ride and handling is soooooo much better now.

Just do it.....you know ya wanna

One thing about this - as we are on the subject - but my BMW dealer who seem quite good and impartial ish sort of hinted that due to the cars setup (335D Msport) that I mgiht see the uneven tyre wear on non run flats...

Any truth in this?

Funnily enough its only since ive had Non runflats that ive noticed the inside wearing much quicker than the rest of the tyre on the rears.

This is due to The tyres not being able to hold the cars weight as well as the Runflats.

You should try and increase your tire pressure I run 43-45 Psi in the rear.

Do you run that on 19"?

Do you think that would help?
