Valve guides
I'm rebuilding my cylinder head and my exhaust valve guides are pretty loose. BMW does not sell them individually or as a set. You must purchase a new cylinder head (really expensive). Does anyone knowers where I could source them or know of a shop that can make them?

I think Victor Reinz makes these parts. Do a search you may find them.

Are you looking for a cylinder head or just the gaskets, you can buy a head for 400$ from a salvage yard and the gasket runs 90$ then you need another gasket kit for the exhaust, intake etc thats around 90$ as well

I'm rebuilding the head. I don't want a used head from a junk yard. I just need the exhaust valve guides.

Nope. BMW does not sell them separately. Annoying. I think I have to have them made.

Ran a search. No valve guides. The do bolts, seals, and gaskets. Looked promising.

I know you've got some miles and want to do the job right but, were you losing any oil before you took it apart? I know I wouldn't want to rebuild a motor and put parts back in with a ton of miles, just asking.
BTW, it's obsurd that the manufacture doesn't sell these or seem to expect people to rebuild the motor. These cars are so well built and could really last a person a very long time with the right work.

Ok update. There's a place in SoCal called Canyon Autoparts that make valve guides for a number if applications including BMWs. They'll pretty much make anything if they have the proper dimentions. However, they don't sell directly to consumers. They do large scale sales to major warehouses that usually only do business with local shops. So I picked up my head and took it to another shop that said they could source the guides. So hopefully be done on Friday.
Just a word to others. It's not really expensive to rebuild the head. Just make sure your shop can replace any part in that head. I'm going on 3 weeks now without my car and this POS rental isn't exactly cheap.

Just a thought (I'm not totally up on newer BMW engines) but can you simply knurl the existing guides as we did on muscle car V8's?

Yes you can. In fact BMW makes two sets of valves for the M52: 5mm and 6mm. Normally you'd need to replace valves anyway so you'd get the larger ones and bore out the guides slightly. I think that's the way BMW wants you rebuild the head. I talked to several shops and they said that's a really risky thing to do because there a good chance the valve guides are most likley not true. With the tolerances being so tight on the N52, here's a good chance of a significant amount oil getting through. They said its safer just to replace the guides since they're so cheap.
