335is oil change?

iDrive and BMW tells me to change my oil every 25,000km. Every other car I ever owned I changed the oil 5000-1000km.

What do you guys think?

You won't hurt anything but your wallet to change your oil more often. You also likely won't see any benefit if you'll be in a different car in three years.

It will hurt your pocket...
Changing synthetic oil every 5000 km (3000 miles) is absolutely NOT necessary.
It is very safe to go 15k miles or one year, as recommended, under normal driving conditions.

Yes, I meant to add that in an edit but apparently it didn't stick.

If you want to be @nal about oil changes, do a 7500mi interval. With typical driving conditions, anything less is a waste of time and money and oil.

My 335IS is at 3500 miles, I plan on getting the break in Oil change now.

After that I will get it done every 5000-7000 miles. (I pay for one, BMW pays for the next, then repeat...

Edit:

I drive my car very aggressively, so that's why I want to change at those intervals. I had to add 2 quarts of oil at 3000 miles, because I burned through it so fast.

Most enthusiasts prefer the 5k-7k miles oil change intervals over the BMW suggested ones. Yes you pay for a more oil changes, but most consider it peace of mind.

The harder you drive, changing your oil more often is recommended.

THAT can't be normal even during break in.. I'm at 50,000 miles and only had to add 1 once between BMW rec. intervals.

lightly boosted 335i...

I changed my oil at 1k miles and never burned a drop... perhaps it was the low mileage oil change... the breakin process followed... or just dumb luck !

synthetic oil has proven to go the miles.... however the filter has not. If you take the time and do testing you'll find synthetic oil will last 10-15k miles (conservative estimate) and change the filter once every 5-7k miles.

I drove so low miles i only did 5k or so a year and was always eligible for the low mileage oil change.

to each his own, i know oil changes are a debated topic

That's what I thought as well. I called two different Service Advisors from two different dealers and they assured me that was normal if I was driving aggressively.

Im stock and rarely take my car WOT, just a couple sprints here and there.

Did Blackstone at 8K miles of moderate driving (38-46K miles) none very hard driving. Still contained some TBN for protection but sure would have been gone at 10K miles and this using Synthetic BMW 5W-30. I will not go past that mileage for a change but frankly you don't know what your oil is good for if you don't have the analysis done, it is pure speculation.
Since BMW is not buying me a new engine and I error on the side of caution and change it way before 15K miles.
Your car your call...

You are entitled to one free oil change a year regardless of milage but sure to use it. A lot have settled on one oil change inbetween the 15k + the computer based recall . That averages out to be once every 7500 miles.

Now that you have determined that 8000 is about right , what else do you get out of the analysis?

You get the metal wear rates (ppm), percentage of antifreeze in the oil (%), flash point (F), actual viscosity rate which along with total baseline number tells you how your oil is doing and what is wearing on your engine.
I don't plan to do another analysis until I get to around 80K miles and just as a check...

It's funny, M cars still got an oil change at 1,200 miles, on the prev gen M3 and M5. Even if it's unnecessary, BMW requires it. BMW is not stupid, they would never do that on free maintenance on their dime for no reason.
