Dash rattle in front of gauge cluster
I have a very persistent rattle that's annoying the hell out of me.
My center speaker grille was also rattling, which I've stopped by removing the speaker cover and lining the edges with foam weather stripping tape. But now, to the left of that, kind of behind the gauges around where the dash meets the windshield, I still have this annoying rattle that even the slightest vibration gets it going. I've tried to isolate the source of this rattle by pushing on the dash, defroster vents, etc. but nothing seems to localize it. Any ideas of what might be the cause? |

I have the same issue. I'm 100% sure is it coming from where the dash connects at the windshield. I even jammed zip ties down there and it rattles significantly less. Only thing I can think is to remove the dash to see what's loose.

I can't answer your question but will chime in with my own. Haha
Anyone have a slight rattle behind the covers on the a-pillars? I think it's exhaust drone (2500rpm) that's causing it... wondering if I could add foam to fix it.

I have a set of panel tools (came in handy when prying up the center speaker grille) so I should be able to use them to push the backer rod into the gap. It comes in different diameters, but the thinnest I can find on the Home Depot and Menard's websites is 3/8", and I'm not sure that'll be thin enough to fit in the gap. Amazon has 1/4" which might be a better choice. |

Not sure how easy that will be. There is about an inch gap from what you see as the top of the dash, to where you actually need to jam something. I couldn't get my trim tools to fit that far down.

I .....think.... that one's actually coming from the engine bay.
Pop the hood, run it, and see |

I got some 3/8" backer rod from Menard's. I cut a length of backer rod the full width of the windshield and used the trim tool to get it down at the base of the windshield.
If anything, 3/8" is actually a bit small for this purpose. There's a decently large gap between the dash and the windshield and it only took very gentle pressure with the trim tool to push the backer rod past the gap. 1/2" or 5/8" might be ideal. Below this gap there's a larger area where basically the backer rod just kinda fell down into it. Here's an extremely detailed MS Paint cross-section view. It didn't immediately quiet down the rattle but after a day or two it seems to have done the trick. I had a similar experience when I did the weather stripping on the center speaker grille trick where it took a day or two for everything to settle and quit rattling. I'm happy to report that between these two fixes my dash is for the most part rattle free. |

A couple more details on the center speaker grille thing I did. First I removed the grille with the trim tool. It's pretty stubborn the first time you remove it, you really have to work the tool in there good and use it as a lever to pop the clips.
Then on the underside of the speaker grille I put foam weather stripping tape along the 3 edges that are flat underneath (all the edges except the one that goes along the windshield, which is in the bottom of this pic): The weather stripping tape comes in a roll like this, I forget the size, it's at home and I'm at work at the moment. There's an occasional small noise from the dash over a bump but for the most part all the persistent rattles that seemed to come from any and all vibrations (and were driving me nuts!) have stopped. |
