Sorry haven't read the whole thread, but i've drove one VXR and IMO it was sh!te.
Mk5/6 Golf GTI, if possible an Edition 30. Great cars, handle, stop and go V.well, I actually want a mk6 after my BM, my friend owns a mk5 and it's just a great flawless car.

Maybe go for the VXR for now, if you want one then it's better to have one at 22 than 32 imo. Whereas you'll never look too old for a BMW.
How are you going to Uni and able to afford either car btw?! |

If you're the sort of person who's going to hanker after the other car until you've owned it, then definitely get the 'burg now and the E92 later. When I was at uni (1998-2001) I was driving a 1989 Escort 1.3 which had cost me the princely sum of £1200. The fact you can even consider these two cars says quite a lot IMO. |

A Saxo got me through Uni. I always wondered how people afforded new CTRs and the like while at Uni, the bank of mum and dad no doubt. My first car was a 1.3 Escort Eclipse, electric front windows, sunroof, central locking, ah those were the days lol. |

I wasn't having a dig mate. I know about working hard during the summers and holidays. Fair play if you can get help from your parents.
I only object when the person never learns the value of money and is a brat lol. Then there is your answer. |

Yea i know what you mean and were you're coming from. I also get pissed off with it, my brother's friend has a brand new Nissan GTR and you won't believe me he's 19, his parent's bought it for him. But them sort of people haven't got a clue about hard earned cash.

Agree that you are at the age where buying silly hot hatches is the thing to do. Buying a BMW now is a miss spent youth in my opinion.
I also agree with DavS1 that the VXR is utter shite. I'd get an S3, like a golf but not a golf. Slightly off topic but you posted in another thread that you have a mortgage and put £50,000 deposit down on your house. Not that you have to justify anything to me. It's just that's one hell of a well paid summer job you've got. Any chance I could get a job there? |

Yea you're right in that i don't have to justify myself but i have a put down a £50000 deposit on a cheap 2 bedroom house and it's on rent. Most of the mortgage is paid through the rent money. Is that good enough for you mate or would you like further info on how much money i have and were i invest it? |

I used to have a 2007 arden blue VXR and loved it for what it was, a fast hatchback that was relatively cheap to run and had not a single issue with it. I now have a 335i which I get 22mpg from rather than 26mpg from the VXR. The things that annoyed me with the vxr was the torque steer especially in the wet and when caning it in 3rd I'd bang it in 4th and it would take a second to take off again. The 335i is awesome compared to the VXR, I don't know if it's the dct gearbox, but when pressing on and changing up a gear it seems to pull harder than the previous gear and it doesn't stop accelerating when engaging the next gear.

Go for the BMW I had vauxhalls when I was 22-25 and had the astra coupe turbo-mainly becuase my grandad worked for them and so I got a nice discount on new cars there! Like you I saved and worked hard for my cars hence have always had nice cars but moving to the E92 BMW is another world.
If it was me I'd save some more money (as you seem to be pretty good at doing it) and gor for a 335i/d. It wouldn't take you too long i'd imagine to save up enough to get a decent one in the early £20k's mark and you'll love the refinement and power. Plus at 22 I'd love sticking my fingers up at everyone driving around in the BM :;p I wish I had spent my money on BMWs earlier than all that dosh on new astras BUT thats just my take on it! |

When you disclose facts like this about yourself in a public forum you must expect it to provoke discussion. I don't ever recall reading posts from other forum members talking about how much they have in the bank or the deposit they paid on a house. Any discussions of a 'financial nature' are normally limited to costs relating to their car.

Don't be so touchy Candy 01. I was making a very subtle and probably quite poor joke about how your summer/part time job funds a more luxurious lifestyle than my full time job. I honestly couldn't give a toss about your finances.
You also seemed to miss my comments about the topic of the thread. Buy an S3 for the best of both worlds. But in reality i'd suggest you spend the £15k on fast women and getting wasted. You are only young once. Whatever you do, don't take vikze92s advice of driving round sticking your fingers up at people. Most people already thing us BMW drivers are a bunch of pricks. PS. denotes the fact that I am engaging in some kind of jocular vernacular. |

Mate if I were you I would go for something like a scirocco. They are fast, cool, not many on the road compared to e92s or golfs and hold there value ready for your BMW later in life?
Hey if any one sees a scirocco they don't automatically think chav unlike a big green rs focus or an overbuilt Astra. Also some models will certainly give them a run for there money. The other thing to consider is at 22 you might change in the next few years so could be another good reason to invest in something that you can defiantly live with. |

Hi, I've just changed from a VXR to a 320d m sport coupe. Had the vxr a few years and loved it. Then I got a bit older (28) and had a few problems with the vxr so decided to go bmw. Best decision I made its a much better quality car.
But at your age as other people have said get the vxr, have some fun with it like I did then when your a few years older go for bmw. But unlike some lucky people who had no problems I did. 2008 vxr with 60k on; new gearbox, new air con compressor, windscreen wiper assembly x2, steering wheel controls x many times, then broken steering rack or column when I decided enough was enough. |
