A wheel repair shop once told me that, there needs to be minimum off 4mm straight hole after the cone part of the bolt holes.Hope you understand what i mean it's hard to explain. Down sides is possibility to weaken the wheels and maybe cracking the wheel more easily. If you are going to do this. Make sure that the company has done it before and knows what they are doing.

I would never grind anything down to increase the offset.

why would you want to increase offsets? if the wheels you have are way too low of an offset, just sell them and get a set of wheels with the correct offset. if the wheels are just a tiny bit too low, then roll/shave/pull the fenders instead. you can shave a couple millimeters off some wheels and some people have done it, but I personally think it should be last resort... if that.

We would not recommend it as it will change the structural integrity of your wheel, which can cause catastrophic failure.

Arguably, some high-disk wheels have a huge back-pad that can be machined down a few millimeters. But generally it's not recommended.
