335d crack in gearbox? According the mechanic

I have a 335d automatic which at a consistent speed of say 60-70mph would suddenly go into neutral gear and the power would just drop forcing you to pull over, turn off the engine and start her up again, in which if would the do same problem again.

Have took It to mechanics, read all the codes, changed £400-500 worth of parts an still no luck.

Finally took it down to another mechanic who tested it and said it was the gearbox, he opened the gearbox he said and saw there's some sort of crack there where the oil?? Leaks out and out it loses pressure (something like that, can't remember word for word)

I don't really want to spend anymore, an just wanted your opinions as I really feel tied down with this forever on going problem.

What parts have been changed?
Did the mecanic give you a list of error codes?

As I know on these auto boxes the mecatronics sleave is known to leak oil but this involves dropping the sump to replace a £15 sleave part but as a result you end up having to replace the sump as it has a filter built in and gearbox oil which is about £18 per litre (need approx 7 litres)

Or it can be the gasket around the bottom of the sump has started to leak?
How old is your car and what milege?

Well at first other mechanics read the codes and changed things such as vacuum pipes, actuator valves and exhaust related things.

The car is a 2008 coupe with 64k mileage

Another strange thing is that my previous mechanic said that the problem is in the dpf and that it would need to be removed and programmed and remapped.

This mechanic however is telling me that the dpf has already been removed????

Have you seen oil around the gearbox yourself? or are you gong on by what the mechanic has said?

I would be personally be getting under the car and having a good look around the gearbox to check oil or take it to another reputable mechanic as gearbox repairs can be £££

With regard to DPF I have known cases where the dpf has been removed and the map that is loaded on is too aggressive can cause the auto tranny to reduce power to prevent damage to it - i.e. if the torque values are set to high etc

There are 2 ways dpf delete can happen - either you take out the old dpf and put a new pipe in or gut the old dpf and refit - anyway you can check?

I'm just off to collect my car now from the mechanic as I left it to him on Saturday an he phoned me and told me what I told you guys about the crack today in the morning so will learn more when I go there an talk to him face to face an then come back and tell you guys.

As above i would be wanting to see the oil leak around the gearbox sump before you take any further course of action - if you can find out more details as to whether your car has a dof delete/remap and then take it from there

I would not be trusting to let those previous mechanics loose on the car anymore...

ok guys here is all the right information.
Firstly i would like to say i have been wasting my time with other mechanics who have made me spend over £500 for NOTHING.

This new mechanic seems to know what his doing and can give a garantee.
So this is what he has confirmed with me:

The problem is that there is a crack in one of the clutches in the gearbox, which when going at high speeds oil escapes though the pressure and causes the gears to have a problem hence the reason the car jumps straight back to neutral gear

These are the codes which come up on the reading

4F85 Ratio Monitoring Clutch E
4F83 Ratio Monitoring Clutch C
4F96 Ratio Monitoring Clutch C-E

Also the inside of the dpf was cleaned, not removed (my mistake)

So the solution? I have to find another gearbox to replace my one with, which looks like its going to cost me around 800 for a gearbox and his going to charge me another 450 to fit it.

Was also thinking if i could just get it repaired but apparently would cost nearly the same.

Given the age and mileage of your car, I'd buy the comprehensive warranty from BMW UK at £100/month. Wait a month (30 day period before any claims) and have them repair it all at their cost.

Assuming the car has been fully serviced of course.

It will cover gearbox issues but beware as these faults are date stamped with frequency and this can be accessed when fault finding and it may come into doubt that you knew about these faults before hand.
Clutch monitoring faults pretty much mean the gearbox is knackered as BMW don't supply repair parts for the ZF gearboxes.Youre best bet may be a ZF specialist who could possibly repair.

If all else fails I'm pretty sure you can send it back to ZF in Germany for overhaul. There's a guy on here with an Alpina who took his to the factory for a service!

They will not only fix your transmission but also make it stronger if you want it to last longer with all that torque.

Found the exact same gearbox on eBay for 550, came off a car the exact same as mine, with the paddle shift, the codes also matched, H6.28 and so.
So hopefully mechanic will fit it in and replace mine when it arrives and that will be the end of a 5 month on going problem, fingers crossed

Baught the gearbox today, just found out that i would need to buy and change the gearbox oil and sump pan.

found it on ebay for around 160-200 for both oil and pump, the ONLY problem is how do i know which is the correct one for my car?? as there are a few with different codes

You don't even need to send the gearbox back to Germany, as there is ZF in Nottingham and I have been told by a guy I know who works there they can repair/rebuild these gearbox.

The problem is bmw want the gearboxes back in Germany and send it to zf over there. Mercedes Benz do the same with parts from us in the uk. It's just a warranty thing between all manufactures

If you want to double check go onto realoem, type in your vin number and get the tranmission part number for your vin and check it with the kit

I brought the meyle oem kit when I did my transmission oil change highly reccomend it

i had mine changed around the 110k mark and when it came out it smelt very burnt but the colour was not black but a very dark brown (I have some pictures somewhere if you want me to post them up)

I didnt notice a big difference straightaway, but after a few miles and the oil circulated I did notice the changes up and down the box more smoother and less jerky. Did you reset the gearbox oil through DIS?
