And over £40k not £30k.

That is one serious motor, I always used to think my mapped 535d sport was about the same as a 550i, and then I drove one!

I would have that in a heartbeat, in fact, anyone want to buy a nice E320cdi avantgarde estate??

Probably more like 45k when you take into account what the original owner would have been given at sale/trade-in. Ouch. Very ouch.

Very nice - drove a 750i with the same engine and that was very nippy. The engine is a beauty and very underrated IMO.

Not sure that depreciation is a record ........ I bought my last X5 at 2 yrs old for £19500, original invoice showed it at £50000 cost. Only 12000 miles as well so thats a massive cost per mile.

Traded it last month after 2 years of driving for £17500, BMW dealer sold it for £20950 so they sold it for £1500 more than I bought it for 24 months previous.

When you bought, it was about the time the government decided to hike the tax bracket and aimed the £400+ at the 4x4 instead of aiming it at what it should of been (ie) any wehicle with over 225g co2 emissions, and the arse fell out of the 4x4 market you gained and bought at the right time, I lost 7K in a year on my 4x4 but i'm not bitter

And the whole country was in meltdown as well, I bought an A6 3.2fsi Quattro avant 3 years old for £12k instead of £18450, and that was at a main dealer.

At the same time I bought the A6 I also looked at a 2005 (3 year old) 535d touring, in blue with cream leather and with pano roof and media pro, 32k miles and that was £13k.

Also I equired about an E500 Avantgarde with a serious load of toys only 28k miles and we agreed on £12k, I knew about it as it was shown on one of the Manheim auction threads on here and it went through at £11k after fees, that was a £61,000 car new.

As I say, the country was on its arse, dealers were dumping stock and prices were the lowest they have ever been.
At the moment they are still too high, but quite rapidly falling by the looks of things.

...but back on topic, I'm in LOVE with that E61; it's absolutely gorgeous and has the right spec.

I think palmnuts mentioned on here that he pays £900 a month on a car loan, that's easily £44K over 4 years in depreciation as he never actually owns the cars, just rents them in essence and pays the depreciation.

You have got to spend your money on something though, no point being the richest man in the grave yard.

You know it's funny, I decided on the E500 as I didn't want another 535d, well I wanted to have a change as I had already owned one, then I couldn't get down to Surrey on the Monday when I said I would and he sold it on the Wednesday so I lost out. So I offered Audi £12k for the A6, they had already come down from £18450 for £14950 so knew they wanted to move some stock desperately.
However, when I sold it in May I only got that back again, where as 535d tourings on 05 plates were back at £18k and the only 2 E500 estates were both at just under £20k and sold quickly.

So I don't always make the right choices.

I bought my M6 with 8k miles for £42k the invoice for the first owner was £95k so 53k in 8000 miles or £6.63 per mile in depreciation

saying that i also got kicked in the nuts on that car

Yes no question 2 years ago was the right time to buy a 4x4. My X5 was a real bargain at that price, have just changed to a new model X5 which is also 2 years old and cost loads more than the £19500 of the previous model. Kinda aware prices may well take a big tumble but hopefully not and you can't stall for ever waiting to see what happens. One thing that may help is the supply of used 4x4s from around 2008 , very few people were buying new then so the market isn't now flooded with used examples.
