Dealer BALLS up! What can i expect.....????

Had the new evaporator changed on the 335d last Monday/Tuesday

Noticed the day after a couple of dirty marks on either side of the trims on the "A" pillars............. couldn't be bothered going striaght back to the dealers as all i seem to do is moan...........

Anyway, the wife drove it on Friday(not far, 15 miles) and rang me and said the steering wheel is loose and she wasn't driving it any further
She confirmed that she had loosened the steering wheel adjuster and re-tightened it and it was still loose

So when i get home i have a look and theres a bout an inch(25.4mm) of play up and down on the wheel - so the whole steering column is loose

So.............. first thing this morning, i get onto the dealer, and wait for the Service Manager to phone me back.
Another guy phoned me back and i explained the dirty marks and then that the S wheel was loose.......... "where are you" he says..........."in leigh at home" ................ "someone will be with you within the hour and leave a car for you to use and i'll call you back later"

IN FACT - heres a fuckin funny one - just turned on the comp to type this and i heard a car alarm outside.............. look out the window, and the black 10 plate 520d that they've given me has gone!!!!!!! My heart sunk......... Its been nicked and its only been here 5 minutes!
So, i look 20yards down the street and there it is, right where next doors car is usually parked! Its a manual and the guy that delivered it hadn't put the handbrake on! Luckily it hadn't hit anything or i presume that would be my fault

Anyway, our bass player is a senior tech at Merc in Manchester and said last night i should demand they come and collect the car(which they have) and that my next service be free of charge to compensate for the cock up - he said thats commonplace practice for Merc................

What do you guys reckon........??? Do i play on the potential safety implications of the whole steering column being loose............ or what???

Judging by their keeness to come out to you, I'd say they know they dropped one, if you don't ask you don't get.

That was my impression!

Last time they cocked up i demanded they come out and collect the car - "sorry, we don't provide that service sir"

This time - i didn't even have to ask................. "be there within the hour sir"

Couldn't agree more, push for all you can get while they're still feeling guilty.

UPDATE.............

BM just called to say all 4 bolts that hold the steering column into the car were loose............

and the 2 trim panels have been ordered and will be fitted first thing in the morning and they'll then call to arrange swapping the cars over..........

Didn't mention anything about a "goodwill" gesture yet as i'm waiting to see what you guys say.............??????

Free service?????? .......... or another thought was if i pay for the ipod interface kit..... will they fit it for me for free?

People moan about the quality of courtesy cars a lot. It's a 1 series, a diesel, only a 4 pot etc. But they have just given you one which could have had serious consequences. These are the same people that charge stupid money per hr for largely uncomplicated work, and try and sell you msport umbrellas and BMW golf bags. Ask for a free m3 and settle for a 5 year servicing package.
Stealers.. They are all tw@s
