How do you reset the service indicator?

Hi Everyone,

First post on e90post.com. Just wanted to say this is a great resource for my new/used car. Thanks to all for sharing.

I tried searching the forums and archives before posting this, but couldn't find the answer.

Is there a way to manually reset the service indicator for the oil change? The reason I need/want to do this is because I've imported my car from the US to Canada which voids the free scheduled maintenance for my 2006 E90 330i Sport. A friend of the family works at the local GM dealer, and I trust him a lot more than the local BMW dealership (poor experience with their service department and my mother-in-law's MINI Cooper S) so I had him perform the oil change. The problem is the indicator light still shows red, indicating that an oil change is overdue.

Any ideas?? Thanks in advance.

hey, welcome aboard. I have not seen anyone figure out a way to reset the service indicator on the e90 as a DIY. I think your best bet at this point is to get the bmw dealer to reset it. If you find a way to do it yourself without the need of a bmw dealer, let us know. This would be very good to know those who plan to keep the car beyond the free maintenance and plan to diy oil change and brake. I think it would be difficult to do it outside dealer because its looks like there are several indicators for service (emission, brake, oil, Insp I, Insp II).

Thanks for the reply txusa03.

I'm going to keep searching other boards, and Google to see if someone has posted a way to do this. I did find one post about pressing and holding the trip reset for 10secs, which does bring up a German sub-menu where the clock and outside temp is, but didn't go any further because their instructions didn't match what I was seeing, and I didn't understand the German either!

I remember there being a way to reset it. I think it had something to do with holding down the trip distance reset button while in the oil service menu. Maybe someone else can chime in as I have never done it.

Push start button, to Radio position (not start/run) when check control image disappears and all that is left is current time on the LCD panel of the instrument cluster, press and hold the odometer reset button. After a few seconds, the oil image will come up. Push and hold the "BC" button of the turn signal stalk until it states "Reset?" let go of the button and push the button back in and hold, a little clock will come up, and then it will say 15,000 miles. It now has been reset

A huge thank-you Placey! This will make keeping my service indicator up to date for any service that I have done outside the dealership a breeze.

Just a note -- I had to turn the car on in order for the oil image to display after holding the odometer reset button. Other than that, the instructions you listed were spot-on! Thanks again.

I tried this today, however I got some German message something like (kfrtng _ _:_ _ ) . I even got to some kind of test where the the odometer and tachometer turned simultaneously, all the icons came up and the small screen refreshed. It did not work for me, please advice. Thanks.

I know what you are describing, that is the hidden menu in German. You might have skipped a step some where. I have not done this myself coz i dont want to accidentally reset my free oil change indicator (that would blows big time).

Official Way to reset service information data

What you entered is the Instrument Cluster Test funtion screen.

After turning the vehicle to the radio mode, (everything on except the engine), you have to hold the button down AFTER the date/time, temp screen comes up in the LCD screen.

To reset the service information data using the cluster:
• KL-15 on and all Variable displays in cluster off (clock should be displayed)
• Press and hold odometer reset button until CBS pictures display in cluster for about
5 seconds then release
• Use the BC button to scroll through till desired resetable picture is displayed.
• “Reset?” is displayed, Press and hold BC button a picture of a small anaolg clock
runs through its display. When complete, the CBS reset that you chose is reset.
• If you want to insure that the reset was done, you can press the BC button while still
looking at the CBS reset pictogarm and the acknowlegment of reset will be shown
with a check mark in a box

This essentially will push your date out further so it's not something you'd use often, if at all, if I understand it correctly.

In the OP's case he got it done at another dealership so he reset it to keep track of when the next one should be. But in my case for example, I recently did a non-scheduled oil change and told them NOT to reset the pc, thus enabling me to get my scheduled one later for "free."

Sorry if what I'm saying is obvious :P

Yes, this should ONLY be reset as in a case such as Kraems, whenever possible do use the Free Maintenace plan with BMW. Not only will it allow your vehicle to be checked for any problems, but you wont have to pay a thing. Free Wipers, Oil service, Brake fluid flush's, these are all essential to keep your vehicle in premium condition. The information i supplied is only for that rare case such as the one that started this thread. I do work for a dealership myself and take pride in the work i do. Every vehicle that i get for a service gets looked over very well, even when under warranty. I have found many instances where the typical oil change turned into a 4 wheel brake service, axles being replaced due to leaking boots, the occasional oil leak being repaired, many of these problems which were stopped before becoming larger problems, and not only that, all done under warranty.
I know people have had problems with some dealer service dept's, I have seen them happen myself. The information i provide is not to discourage the services being done at the dealership, but as the starter to this thread stated, it was due to an uncommon circumstance that this procedure had to be performed.
Take advantage of the maintenance, no other manufacturer will cover as much as BMW does.
The occasional trip to the dealer can save you a lot of money down the road by finding the problems before they escalate.

Did the same thing and the dealer did not reset the OD allowing for a free oil change later when indicated!

Great post!

One problem though: I had only meant to change the service date in the first place from 11/2006 just to get rid off the service warning light off my dash. Anyhow, 11/2006 was the date I got the bmw service maintenance [at around 15k miles] and I believed the dealer forgot to reset this date and changed it to sometime in 2007.

But along resetting this date, I accidentally reset the oil change menu which now shows that I'll have 15k more miles to go until the second interval. I was trying to find out if I can reduce the 15k interval to let say 12k

My question is: would the BMW system still tell me when is the appropriate time [based on driving condition] to bring the car in for service although I had reset the system earlier without actually changing the oil?

I'd appreciate it if you guys could give me some advice on this

Unfortunately, there is no way to lower the interval time from when you reset it. However, these cars have "oil condition sensors" which allow the service interval to actually set itself. By sensing the condition of the oil, the 15,000 mile service is no longer an exact mileage due to the way different people drive. Therfore, with it only being about 3000 miles difference, i dont think you should be worried, if you had only 1,000 miles left, then i would be a little worried, but that shouldnt be a problem. So, you dont have to be worried, for the fact that it will still tell you when it's time to bring it in for service.
I ahve done services on vehicles with 10,000 miles, and some with 20,000 miles, nowadays its just how people drive.
