potholes ruined my beautiful rims
Coming home from the gym, and I guess there was construction in the area but there were no signs posted. I ended up hitting a pothole going about 30-35 and my car just got engulfed by it. I heard a "BAM" "BAM" and I pulled over to find the pothole completely scuffed my rims, pretty bad. More so on the front passenger side than the back. I had worked hard to keep them scuff free from curbs and such, but this looks pretty damn bad. I also need an alignment (I'm sure). I don't think there is any damage to the steering components but I can't be sure.
My question is this: Is there anything I can do to the wheels to get the freakin scuff off of them? Thanks

yeah, i am on run flats. It's basically on the outer ridge of the rim, like a hard scuffing in two distinct areas around the ridge. the tires seem to be in good shape and they are brand new. I'll post pics in the morning, thanks for the help thus far though guys.

There should be some local guy that can refinish wheels. There are 3 or 4 here in Tulsa that do great work so I would assume you would be able to find someone in Cali! They usually charge $40-50 per wheel. Good luck, sorry to hear that.

You know you can get the city/town to pay for the costs, right?
I did this about 15 years ago when I ran over a newly-constructed median that had not been painted and signs had not been placed to warn it was there (it was dusk and I didn't see it). I had driven that road every day for 5 years and one day it was just there. So, I came back, took some pics, and sent the repair bill to the city (after calling around for a few days, I was directed to the right office. It varies by state, I assume). They paid for my new rack and pinion, though it did take them about a year to hand over the check. Good luck. |

The next day (monday) I drove by to get new tires in that town, the road crew was patching up the pothole! Found out the DOT covers parkways in NYS so I sent in the claim form for a new tire and a few weeks later I got this letter: From November to March, we are not liable for any damages incurred from the road due to sesonal changes.

X2 on the some local shop will be able to repair them. Depending on the severity should be under $100 per wheel, may try to send your city the bill as was also mentioned but considering how broke CA is I doubt anything will come of it

DOT or whatever is a joke. All those places take your tax money and spend minimum or road repair.....they dont care about your tires, wheels, or your safety.

I have had a total of 3 wheels screwed by potholes, and not had a lick of luck getting the respective municipalities to pay for any of them. Very very frustrating.

My grandfather used to be a cab driver in the 60's and he took the DOT to small claims court and won, but this was back in the 80's. He told me to take them to small claims but back then it didn't seem worth my time. Also with a different car, I damaged 2 wheels on one side due to a deep pothole...sent in a claim to the town the road was in and their insurance company responded with "Liability is limited due to the pothole wasn't reported and hasn't been repaired yet. Liability can be claimed only if the pothole was reported and it has not been repaired in a resonable time before damages occured" so much BS... |

Yesterday a BMW SA told me that they have a guy who comes into the shop on a regular basis to fix wheel scuffs. The guy sands down the scuff and then paint with BMW paint. The cost is $110 per wheel. He said that they had 3 cars lined up that day to get wheel fixed. He also mentioned that they fix bent wheels too. I don't know how much that costs.

thanks for all the help guys. i called around and there is a local guy that fixes scuffs on the wheels, i remember taking my moms 5 series into before her lease was up because she loved to grind against curbs when parking. he also told me that he'll take a look to see if there is any wheel damage... I only hope there isn't.
The thought crossed my mind to file with the city, but I am definably not going to wait for them to send me a check before I repair this. I know most people will not notice it, but I will, and it drives me absolutely insane. It's like focusing on a disgusting mole on the bottom of the foot of a supermodel. It really sucks, especially since I work really hard to keep my beast in perfect condition.
