I was actually thinking about doing something similar but really the remote doesn't work as good as it should and there's really no need to have the display installed how often do you have to mess with it. Just my $0.02

If you use the new firmware where the mute button on the remote turns off processing temporarily for a phone call, preventing the dreaded echo problem, then ready access to the remote (and to the screen to visually confirm the toggle) is handy.
